Beforethestudy,theMassachusettsresearcherstheorizedthatthespindlesarethebrain’swayofpreventingsensoryinformationfrompassingthroughthethalamusandwakingtherestofthebrainduringsleep.Theyfoundthatsleeperswhoexperiencedthemostsleepspindlesduringthenightwerealsothesoundestsleepersandwereleastlikelytobeawakenedbynoise.Scientistsalreadyknowthatmostpeoplebecomelightersleeperswithage,mostlikelybecauseolderpeopleexperienceless“slowwavesleep”,whichisthedeepeststageofsleep.Peoplealsoproducefewersleepspindlesastheyage.Butevenwhencontrollingforthestageofsleepapersonwasin,thenumberofsleepspindlesstillpredictedtheirriskforawakeningbecauseofnoise.
