石油是碳氢化合物。我们通常以C代表碳,以H代表氢,则烷烃(石蜡烃)、烯烃、环烷烃及芳香烃其分子结构均不相同。如烯烃类有一组双键结构(请比较异丁烷与异丁烯),芳香烃为六隅体结构等。而甲烷即是含有一个碳原子,乙烷含两个碳原子,丙烷含三个碳原子,依此类推。
