Since1981,thelocalgovernmentofYangxianCountyhasputforwardfourbansfor

livingareas,cuttingdowntreeswheretheynest,usingchemicalsintheirfood-finding
areas,andfiringgunsintheirbreeding(繁殖)areas.TheChinesegovernmentarranged
specialfundstoprotectthehabitatofcrestedibises,sealingoffmountainstoplant
treesinthebirds1livingareas.Chinastartedtheartificialbreedingofcrestedibisesin
1991andhadbredmorethan400birdsinShaanxiasoflastyear.
Yearsofconstantefforthavebroughtpromisingresults.Itisestimatedthatthereare
morethan5,000crestedibisesintheworldnow,andamajorityofthemlivein
Shaanxi.Thebird'shabitatinChinahasrisenfromlessthan5squarekmin1981to
thecurrent15,000squarekm.
