Haveyoueverbeensolostinthoughtthatyourhandstartsmovinginvoluntarily,scribblingdoodlesorwordsinyournotebookwithoutyourealizingit?Wealldoitatsomepointoranother–it’sacommonformofdistractionwhenboredinclass,meetings,orevenjustpassingtime.However,haveyoueverstoppedtothinkabouttheimplicationsthishabitmayhaveonourmentalhealth,productivity,andevenourenvironment?
Theactofscribblinginanotebook,orwhatsomepeoplerefertoas“tearing”or“ripping”pages,hasbeenacontroversialtopicforyears.Somesayit’sjustaharmlessdistraction,awaytoreleasecreativeenergyorcopewithanxiety;whileothersarguethatit’sarecklesshabitthatwastespaper,disruptsothers,andreflectsalackofdisciplineandresponsibility.Assomeonewhohasalwaysbeenaprolificscribblermyself,IhavetoadmitthatIseesomemeritinbothsidesofthedebate.
Ontheonehand,there’snodenyingthattearingpagesoutofanotebookisanenvironmentallyunfriendlyact.It’sestimatedthatover4billiontreesarecutdowneveryyeartomakepaperproducts,andthat60%ofthatpaperendsupinlandfillsorincinerators.Whilerecyclinghasbecomemorecommon,it’sstillacomplicatedandresource-intensiveprocessthatnotallmaterialsaresuitablefor.Bytearingoutpagesofournotebooksbeforewe’redonewiththem,we’reessentiallycontributingtothiswastewithoutmuchthoughtoreffort.Furthermore,we’realsocreatingmoreclutterandmess,notjustonourdesksorbags,butalsoinourminds.Studieshaveshownthatamessyworkspacecanhaveanegativeimpactonourconcentration,mood,andoverallperformance,asitdistractsusandmakesusfeeloverwhelmed.
Ontheotherhand,there’salsosomeevidencethatscribblinginanotebookcanhavesometherapeuticbenefits.Manypsychologistsandarttherapistsusedrawingorwritingexercisesasawaytohelppatientswithmentalhealthissuessuchasdepression,anxiety,andtrauma.Theseexercisesareoftenreferredtoas“expressivetherapies”astheyencouragethepersontoexternalizeandregulatetheiremotions,thoughts,andmemoriesinanon-threateningway.They’realsosaidtoimprovecognitivefunction,memory,andevenphysicalhealth,byreducingstress,boostingimmunity,andenhancingcreativity.Forsomepeople,scribblinginanotebookmayserveasasimilarformofself-expression,awaytoprocesstheirinnerworldandcopewiththestressofdailylife.
Sowhatdoesallofthismeanforus,thenotebook-scribblersoftheworld?Shouldwestoptearingpagesandstarttypingeverythingonourdigitaldevices?Shouldweseektherapytodealwithour“reckless”behavior?Shouldwefeelguiltyforwastingpaperandcausingenvironmentaldamage?Theanswer,asalways,isnotblackorwhite,butsomewhereinbetween.
Ifyou’resomeonewhoenjoysscribblinginanotebook,I’dencourageyoutoreflectonyourmotivations,habits,andimpacts.Trytounderstandwhyyoudoit–isitoutofboredom,anxiety,creativity,orhabit?Isitaroutinethatyoucanchangeormodify?Next,thinkabouttheconsequencesofyouractions–areyouwastingpaper,disturbingothers,orhurtingyourself?Canyoutakestepstoreducetheseharms,suchasusingapencilinsteadofapen,ortearingoutpagesonlywhennecessary?Lastly,considerthealternatives–arethereotherwaysyoucanexpressyourselforcopewithstressthataremoresustainable,productive,orhealthy?Canyouuseadigitalnote-takingapp,orswitchtoamoreeco-friendlystationerybrand?
