InNovember1980,ataskforcewasappointedwithinSubcommitteeCoftheAmericanNationalStandards(ANSI)B16CommitteetodevelopastandardforpipeflangesinsizesNPS26throughNPS48.EveryattemptwasmadetostandardizethosedimensionsthatexistedwithintheindustryforthematerialscoveredbyANSIB16.5.
Promptedbysuggestionsfromcommitteemembers,thetaskforcewasauthorizedtoincreasethesizerangetoNPS60.ThefirstdraftwasdevelopedinDecember1982toincludeClass75throughClass1500forthesizerangeNPS26throughNPS60.FlangedimensionswerebasedontheManufacturersStandardizationSociety,StandardPractice(MSSSP)44flanges,exceptforClass75flangesthatareANSI/API605flanges.
AttherequestoftheAmericanPetroleumInstitute(API),flangedimensions,inaccordancewiththeAPIStandard605,wereincludedinthesubsequentdrafts.Class1500flangesweredeletedduetoalackofinterestinusinglarge-sizeflangesinthatpressure–temperaturerating.
TheAPI605flangesforClasses150and300andforsizesNPS36andsmallerforclasseshigherthanClass300arenotcompatiblewiththeMSSSP-44flanges.Thus,theMSSSP-44flangesaredesignatedasSeriesAflanges,andtheAPI605flangesaredesignatedasSeriesBflangesinthisStandard.MaterialscoveredinthisStandardareasinANSIB16.5,exceptnickelbasealloysareexcluded.Pressure–temperatureratingsareinaccordancewithANSIB16.5.
