Part1TodayI'mgoingtotellyouaboutCleanUpAustraliaDay.ListeningtextIt’sonedayoftheyearwhenpeopleinAustraliagettogethertocleanuptheirlocalenvironment.Itstartedin1987whenIanKiermanwascompetinginaround-the-worldyachtrace.Hewasshockedduringtheracebythepollutionhefoundontheoceans.Therewasrubbishfloatingeverywhere.SowhenhegotbacktoSydney,hedecidedtoorganizeaclean-upday.HebeganwithSydneyHarbour.In1989hegot40,000volunteerstohelphimcleanitup.Theycollectedtonnesofoldcarbodies,plasticsofallkinds,glassbottlesandcigarettebutts.ItwassosuccessfulthatlanorganizedthefirstCleanUpAustraliaDayin1990.Thistimemorethan300,000peopleofferedtohelpanditwasanothersuccess.Sincethenithasbecomeayearlyeventwithmoreandmorepeoplecomingtohelp.Here’satableshowingthemostcommonkindsofrubbishfoundin2001onCleanUpAustraliaDay.Youcanseethatthetopthreearecigarettebutts,glassbottlesandplasticbags.Wefoundthatsomeofthemcouldberecycled.InfactCleanUpAustraliaDayworkssowellthatwenowhaveBusinessCleanUpDayandSchoolsCleanUpDayaswell.
