ThestudywaswrittenandresearchedbyBritain’sNationalConsumerCouncil
(NCC)forlobbygroupConsumerInternational.ItwasfundedbytheGermanand
DutchgovernmentsandtheEuropeanCommission.
“Whilemanygoodandusefulclaimsarebeingmade,itisclearthereisalong
waytogoinensuringshoppersareadequatelyinformedabouttheenvironmental
impactofproductstheybuy,”saidConsumersInternationaldirectorAnnaFielder

The10-countrystudysurveyedproductpackaginginBritain.WesternEurope,
ScandinaviaandtheUnitedStates.ItfoundthatproductssoldinGermanyand
theUnitedKingdommadethemostenvironmentalclaimsonaverage.
Thereportfocusedonclaimsmadebyspecificproducts,suchasdetergent(洗涤剂)
insectspraysandbysomegardenproducts.Itdidnottesttheclaims,but
comparedthemtolabelingguidelinessetbytheInternationalStandards
Organization(ISO)inSeptember,1999.
Researchersdocumentedclaimsofenvironmentalfriendlinessmadebyabout2,000
productsandfoundmanytoovagueortoomisleadingtomeetISOstandards.
“Manyproductshadspecially-designedlabelstomakethemseemenvironmentally
friendly,butinfactmanyofthesesymbolsmeannothing,”saidreport
researcherPhilipPage.
“Laundrydetergentsmadethemostnumberofclaimswith158.Householdcleaners
weresecondwith145separateclaims.whilepaintswerethirdonourlistwith
