LastThursday,theUSFishandWildlifeService(FWS)announcedthatsixredwolfpupshad

beenborninthewild.That'sgreatnewsforendangeredredwolvesandmarksthefirsttimethese

Longago,redwolveslivedallthroughtheUSSoutheast.Butasthewolveswerehunted,and

asmoreandmorelandwastakenoverforcities,roadsandfarms,thewolvesbegantodieout.

In1973,anewlawcalledtheEndangeredSpeciesActwaspassed.Itwasdesignedtoprotect

animalsthatwereindangerofdyingout,likeredwolves.Atthetime,therewereonlyabout17

redwolvesremaininginthewild.

Fourteenofthosewolveswerecaughtandkeptincaptivity(圈养)toprotectthem.The

programwascalledtheRedWolfRecoveryProgramandledbyFWS.By1980,redwolveswere

believedtobeextinctinthewild.

Luckily,thewolvesdidwellincaptivity,andtheirnumberscontinuedtogrow.Soon,the

FWSbeganreleasing(放生)redwolvesbackintothewild.Between1987and1994,therecovery

programreleased60adultredwolves.

Overtime,thosewolvesspreadout,pairedup,andbegantohavepups.In2008,therewere47

wildpupsborn.By2012,redwolfnumbershadhitanewhighpointofabout120wolvesinthe

wild.

Sadly,though,wildredwolfnumbersbegantodropagain.Somewolveswereshotand

otherswerehitbycars.Asthenumberofadultsfell,thenumberofpupsbeingbornalsobeganto
