Thescientistsvirtuallymodeledandstudiedcarefullyelephants'40p53proteins,findingtwowaysthegenecouldhelpelephantsavoidcancer.First,thefactthatelephantspossessmultiplecopieslowersthechanceofp53nolongerworkingbecauseofmutations.Additionally,elephants'p53copiesactivateinresponsetovaryingmutationsandsorespondtodamagedcellsdifferently,whichlikelygivesanedgewhendetectingandgettingridofmutations.
