Kohda’spreviousresearchshowedthatbluestreakcleanerwrasses(清洁鱼)canpassthemirrortest.Intheirfirstmirrorteststudies,publishedin2023and2022,Kohda’steamexposedwild-caughtcleanerfishinseparatetanks(水缸)tomirrorsforaweek.Theresearchersthenputbrowncolorjustbeneaththescales(鱼鳞)onthefish’sthroats,makingsomemarksthatlookliketheparasites(寄生虫).Whenthemarkedfishsawthemselvesinamirror,theybeganstrikingtheirthroatsonrocksorsandinthebottomofthetank,apparentlytryingtoremovethem.
Fishthatrecognizetheirreflectioninthemirrormostlikelyfirstlearntoidentifythemselvesbyseeingthatthemovementofthefishinthemirrormatchestheirownmovement,researchersthink.
