abeautifulworkofgenius,butitdoesgetalittlecomplicatedattimes.
However,whenwegetintothemeatofthisWorldWarIInovel,it'salsoan
upsettingstoryofachildhoodtornapartbywar.IfsaboutParisianMarieLaurewho
hasbeenblindsinceshewassix,andaGermanorphancalledWernerwhofinds
himselfatthecenteroftheHitlerYouth.Bothoftheirstoriesaretoldwithsensitivity
andsympathy,eachoneforceddownapathbytheirpersonalcircumstancesandby
thatdestructivemonster-war.
Ithinkthisisthekindofbookyouwillneverappreciateifyoustoptoosoon-I
learnedthatlesson.Fromthefirsttolastpage,thereisathemeofinvisiblelines
runningparallel(平行的)tooneanotherandsometimes,justsometimes,crossing
inthestrangestway.Thesetwolivesweareintroducedtoseemtobeworldsapart,
