HundredsofyearsagoinwhatisnowGreatBritainandNorthernFrance,livedtheCelts(凯尔特人),whoworshipped(崇拜)natureandhadmanygods,withthesungodastheirfavorite.TheycelebratedtheirNewYearonNovember1stwhichwasmadeeveryyearwithafestivalandmarkedtheendofthe"seasonofthesun"andthebeginningof"theseasonofdarknessandcold."

OnOctober31stafterthecropswereallharvestedandstoredforthelongwinterthecookingfiresinthehomeswouldbeextinguished(消失).TheDruids,theCelticpriests,wouldmeetinthehilltopinthedarkoakforest(oaktreeswereconsideredsacred).Theywouldlightnewfiresandoffersacrificesofcropsandanimals.Astheydancedaroundthefires,theseasonofthesunpassedandtheseasonofdarknesswouldbegin.

WhenthemorningarrivedtheDruidswouldgiveanemberfromtheirfirestoeachfamilywhowouldthentakethemhometostartnewcookingfires.Thesefireswouldkeepthehomeswarmandfreefromevilspirits.

TheNovember1stfestivalwascalledSamhain(pronounced"sow-en").Thefestivalwouldlastfor3days.Many

peoplewouldparadeincostumesmadefromtheskinsandheadsoftheiranimals.ThisfestivalwouldbeethefirstHalloween.

TheCelticswouldcarryalantern(灯笼)whentheywalkedontheeveofOctober31.Theselanternswerecarvedoutofbigturnips(大头菜)andthelightswerebelievedtokeeptheevilspiritsaway.Childrenwouldcarvefacesintheturnips.Thesecarvedturnipswerecalled"jack-o-lanterns.

Itissaidthatthe"jack-o-lantern"gotitsnamefromastingy(吝啬的)andmeanoldman,namedJack,whowhenhediedwastoomeantogetintoheaven.WhenJackwenttohellhewasmeetbytheDevilwhogavehimapieceof

burningcoalandsenthimaway.Jackplacedtheburningcoalinaturniptouseasalanterntolighthisway.ThelegendsclaimthatJackisstillwalkingwiththelanternlookingforaplacetostay.

WhentheearlysettlerscametoAmericatheyfoundthebigroundorangepumpkin.Beinglargerandmuchmorecolorfulthanturnips,thepumpkinmadegreat"jack-o-lanterns".Eventuallythepumpkinwouldreplacetheturnip.EventuallythePumpkinwouldbeethemostwidelyrecognizedsymbol(象征)oftheHalloweenholiday.

Thehistoryof"Trick'O'Treating"canbetracedback(追溯)totheearlycelebrationsofAllSoul'sDayinBritain.Thepoorwouldgobeggingandthehousewiveswouldgivethemspecialtreatscalled"soulcakes".Thiswascalled"goinga-souling",andthe"soulers"wouldpromisetosayaprayerforthedead.
