侠侠官联盟列系联盟列系 83.ThefollowingappearedaspartofamemorandumfromtheNostrum,alargepharmaceutical“Theproposaltoincreasethehealthandretirementbenefitsthatouremployeesreceiveshouldnotbeimplementedatthistime.Anincreaseinthesebenefitsisnotonlyfinanciallyunjustified,sinceourlastyear’sprofitswerelowerthanthoseoftheprecedingyear,butalsounnecessary,sinceourchiefcompetitor,Panacea,offersitsemployeeslowerhealthandretirementbenefitsthanwecurrentlyoffer.Wecanassumethatouremployeesarereasonablysatisfiedwiththehealthandretirementbenefitsthattheynowhavesincearecentsurveyindicatedthattwothrdoftherespondentsviewedthemfavorably.”TheviceofNostrumarguesanincreaseinhealthandretirementbenefitsforemployeesisnotaprudentchoiceatthisjuncture.Hisreasoningisthatanincreaseinbenefitsisbothfinanciallyunjustifiedandunnecessary—financiallyunjustifiedbecauselastyear’sprofitswerelowerthaninthepast,andunnecessarybecauseNostrum’schiefcompetitoroffersinferiorbenefitstoitsemployeesthandoesNostrum,andbecausearecentsurveyofNostrumemployeesindicatesthattwo-‐thirdsoftherespondentsviewedthecurrentbenefitspackagefavorably.Whiletheargumentpartiallyjustifiessomemeritoriouspoints,itisnotcompleyAtfacevalue,thelinkbetweenemployeebenefitsandprofitsseemsreasonable.Companiesthatarenotprofitableareusuallyhesitant,orevenunwilling,tospendmoreonprogramslikeincreasedemployeebenefits.AlthoughNostrum’sprofitslastyearwerelowerthantheprecedingyeardoesnotnecessarilyimplythatNostrumiscurrentlyexperiencingfinancialdifficultiesthatpreventitfromincreasingemployeebenefitsatthistime.Perhapsthepreviousyear’sprofitswerethroughtheroof;whereaslastyear’sprofits,albeitlower,weresufficienttofundanincreaseinthebenefitspackagewithoutforcingtheintothered.Also,thefactthatNostrum’schiefcompetitorprovideslowerbenefitstoitsemployeesisnotagoodreasonforNostrumtowithholdanincreasefromitsemployees.Providinggoodpayandgoodbenefitsareamongthebestwaystoacquiretheemployeeloyaltythatisanimportantassettoany.Nostrumshouldalsomakesurethatitsemployeeshavelittlereasontoseekemploymentelsewhere,andespeciallyfromitschiefcompetitor.Finally,onecan lfromtheresultsofthesurveythatone-‐thirdofrespondentsmayhaveviewedthecurrentbenefitspackageunfavorably.Ifthatisthecase,suchwidespreadsatisfactionwouldseriouslyweakenthevice’sargument.Itisimpossibletoassessthereliabilityofthesurvey’sresultsortomakeaninformedmendationwithoutaccessingmorespecificinformationabouthowtheseotheremployeesInconclusionthevice’sargumentagainstimplementingabenefitsincreaseisunsubstantialandflimsy.Inordertostrengthentheargument,hemustprovideevidencethatthebenefitsincreasewouldhaveaanoverallandlastingnegativeimpactonthe ’sprofitability.Inaddition,theauthorshouldgivemo
