PublichealthexpertssaymanyfactorscontributetoCampylobacter'sdrugresistance;thewidespreaduseoffluoroquinolononesbyU.S.poultryfarmersoverthepastdecadeisoneofthem.

FluoroquinolononeswerefirstapprovedforuseinhumansbytheU.S.FoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)in1986.In1995theFDAgrantedpoultryfarmerspermissiontotheusethedrugsinlivestock.LastyeartheFDAbannedtheantibioticfromfood-producinganimals,citingtheconcernsraisedbypublichealthexpertsoverdrug-resistantbacteria.
