3.UniversityMergerUniversitymergerahottopicbothonandoffcampushasreceivedmuchpublicattention.People'sattitudestowardsitvarygreatly.Somepeoplefavoritasanimportantstepthatuniversitiestaketowardsthegoaloffirst-rateworlduniversities.Theyarguethatonlythroughmergerscanuniversitiesgivefullplaytotheirownadvantagesandmakeupfortheirdisadvantages.TakethemergerbetweenTsinghuaUniversityandtheInstituteofAppliedArtsasanexample.Theformer'sstrengthsinthefieldofhightechnologycomplementthelatter'sreputationforart.TheyalsopointoutthatuniversitymergerswillincreasethecompetitivepowerofChineseuniversitiesintheworld.Inspiteoftheseargumentstherearethosewhoseeitasahastydecisionwhichhassomepotentialproblems.Forinstancelocatedfarawayfromeachothertheuniversitiesinvolvedinamergerareusuallyfacedwithtoughproblemsofmanagementstudentsecurityetc.Inmyopinionuniversitymergerhasmoreadvantagesthandisadvantages.Howeveruniversitiesshouldalsotakeintoaccountthepotentialdangersresultingfrommergersandtakesomemeasurestosolvetheseproblems.UniversityMergerUniversitymerger,ahottopicbothonandoffcampus,hasreceivedmuchpublicattention.People'sattitudestowardsitvarygreatly.Somepeoplefavoritasanimportantstepthatuniversitiestaketowardsthegoaloffirst-rateworlduniversities.Theyarguethat,onlythroughmergerscanuniversitiesgivefullplaytotheirownadvantagesandmakeupfortheirdisadvantages.TakethemergerbetweenTsinghuaUniversityandtheInstituteofAppliedArtsasanexample.Theformer'sstrengthsinthefieldofhightechnologycomplementthelatter'sreputationforart.TheyalsopointoutthatuniversitymergerswillincreasethecompetitivepowerofChineseuniversitiesintheworld.Inspiteofthesearguments,therearethosewhoseeitasahastydecisionwhichhassomepotentialproblems.Forinstance,locatedfarawayfromeachother,theuniversitiesinvolvedinamergerareusuallyfacedwithtoughproblemsofmanagement,studentsecurity,etc.Inmyopinion,universitymergerhasmoreadvantagesthandisadvantages.However,universitiesshouldalsotakeintoaccountthepotentialdangersresultingfrommergersandtakesomemeasurestosolvetheseproblems.

4.EnergyCrisisOneofthemainproblemstheworldisfacingtodayistheenergycrisis.TheworldhasconsumedtoomuchenergydailyparticularlythewestofEuropeandNorthofAmericausethelargermountofit.Fuelswhichareusedtoproduceenergyatthemomentseemtonmoutsoon.Wearemuchworriedaboutapossibleenergycrisisasweexperiencedtheonethatoccurredin1970sandcausedusthegreatpanic.Manysuggestionshavebeenmadeintermsofenergyconservation.Someofthemarenotverypracticalbutotherscoldbeusedsuccessfully.Energyisknowntobeofgreatimportancetoourexistence.Wecanhardlyimaginehowwecouldsurviveinthisworldwithoutenergy.Noenergymeansthatallvehiclessuchascarstrainsbusesplanesandshipsthatneedoiltoworkwouldbeunabletonm.Theworldwouldbedarkanddead.Sotopreventtheenergycrisisitisofnecessitytoconserveallsourcesofenergyassomepeoplesuggest.Butgreatsourcesofenergyareneededifgovernmentswanttodevelopindustryandmakelifemorecomfortableandmostoftheenergyisconsumedinindustry.Itishoweverdifficulttosuggestanypossibleenergyconservationinindustrybecausemanyofthesuggestionswouldmeanthatsomepeoplewouldlosetheirjobs.Obviouslyconservationisnotgoingtobethegoodanswertotheenergycrisis.Oneofthepossiblesolutionsistousetheforcesofnatureforexamplethewindtheseatheriverandthesun.Itisstrangetothinkthatthesesourcesofenergywereusedlongagoforwindmillsandwatermillsbutthenwerealmostforgotten.Surewecanseeagaintheseforcesasgreatpotentialformsofenergy.EnergyCrisisOneofthemainproblemstheworldisfacingtodayistheenergycrisis.Theworldhasconsumedtoomuchenergydaily,particularlythewestofEuropeandNorthofAmericausethelargermountofit.Fuelswhichareusedtoproduceenergyatthemomentseemtonmoutsoon.Wearemuchworriedaboutapossibleenergycrisis,asweexperiencedtheonethatoccurredin1970sandcausedusthegreatpanic.Manysuggestionshavebeenmadeintermsofenergyconservation.Someofthemarenotverypracticalbutotherscoldbeusedsuccessfully.Energyisknowntobeofgreatimportancetoourexistence.Wecanhardlyimaginehowwecouldsurviveinthisworldwithoutenergy.Noenergymeansthatallvehiclessuchascars,trains,buses,planesandshipsthatneedoiltoworkwouldbeunabletonm.Theworldwouldbedark,anddead.So,topreventtheenergycrisis,itisofnecessitytoconserveallsourcesofenergyassomepeoplesuggest.Butgreatsourcesofenergyareneededifgovernmentswanttodevelopindustryandmakelifemorecomfortable,andmostoftheenergyisconsumedinindustry.Itis,however,difficulttosuggestanypossibleenergyconservationinindustrybecausemanyofthesuggestionswouldmeanthatsomepeoplewouldlosetheirjobs.Obviously,conservationisnotgoingtobethegoodanswertotheenergycrisis.Oneofthepossiblesolutionsistousetheforcesofnature,forexamplethewind,thesea,theriverandthesun.Itisstrangetothinkthatthesesourcesofenergywereusedlongagoforwindmillsandwatermillsbutthenwerealmostforgotten.Surewecanseeagaintheseforcesasgreatpotentialformsofenergy.

5.Post-graduateCrazeCoolsOffThepost-graduatecrazehaslongsincebeenahotissueonmostcampusesaroundthecountry.AccordingtothestatisticsreleasedbyShanghaiEducationalTestInstitute79299studentsinShanghaisatinforthepost-graduateentranceexamsin2003adramaticriseof32.6%overthepreviousyear.Theyearof2003isthetenthyearsincethenumberofpostgraduatetesttakersbegantogrowrapidlyandsteadily.Howeversincethentherisinglinehasgraduallyplateauedyearbyyearwithamodestriseof6.7%1.8%2.1%respectivelyin200420052006.In2007thenumberoftesttakersevendroppedby6.5%incomparisonwith2006.Allthesestatisticspointtoaninterestingphenomenonthepost-graduatetestafteraten-yearcrazeisstartingtocooloff.Threemajorfactorsaccountforthecoolingoffofthepost-graduatecraze.Oneisthepost-graduateeducationreform.Post-graduatestudentsused
