1947,inthebeliefthateveryoneshouldhavetherighttoperform,andtheydidsoinapublichousedisusedforyears.
Soon,groupsofstudentsfirstlyfromEdinburghUniversity,andlaterfromtheuniversitiesofOxfordand
Cambridge,DurhamandBirminghamweremakingthejourneytotheScottishcapitaleachsummertoperformtheatreby
little-knownwritersofplaysinsmallchurchhallstothepeopleofEdinburgh.
Todaythe“Fringe”,oncelessrecognized,hasfaroutgrownthefestivalwitharound1,500performancesoftheatre,music
anddanceoneveryoneofthe21daysitlasts.Andyetasearlyas1959,withonly19theatregroupsperforming,somesaidit
wasgettingtoobig.
Apaidadministratorwasfirstemployedonlyin1971,andtodaythereareeightadministratorsworkingallyearroundand
