Edmonston'sstudyprojectedthatby2050,21percentoftheU.S.populationwillbeofmixedracialorethnicancestry,upfromanestimateofsevenpercenttoday.Amongthird-generationHispanicandAsianAmericans,exogamy-marriageoutsideone'sethnicgrouportribe-isatleast50percent,heandothersestimate.ExogamyremainsmuchlessprevalentamongAfricanAmericans,butithasincreasedenormously,fromabout1.5percentinthe1960sto8to10percenttoday.

Suchaprofounddemographicshiftcouldtakeplacewhilenoonewaswatchingbecause,officially,noonewaswatching.Federalagenciestraditionallycollectedracialdatausingaformula-oneperson,onerace-similartothetime-honoredvotingprinciple.Thus,theCensusBureaucouldestimatethatoncensusformsnomorethantwopercentofthepopulationwouldclaimtobemultiracial.Intheabsenceofamorestraightforwardcount,noonecouldknowforsurewhatthedemographicsare.

That'sabouttochange.Afterthe2000census,theU.S.Governmentshouldhaveabetteridea.In1997,theOfficeofManagementandBudget,whichoverseesfederalstatisticalpractices,approvedadirectiveallowingpeopletocheekasmanyracialboxesastheybelieveapplytothem.Theshiftwasacompromisebetweenthedemandsofsomeinterestgroupsthatwantedtheadditionofa"multiracial"box,andthosethatobjectedtoanychange,fearingdilutionoftheirnumbers.

Meanwhile,intheabsenceofofficialnumbers,withtheheightenedtensionsurroundingracialissues,andwiththemutualsuspicionthatexistsamongcompetingracialandethnicinterestgroups,there'slittleagreementonwhatintermarriagewillmeanforU.S.societyinthefuture.
