19/10/2023Techno-economicIndicatorThebuildingofMGAintroducednewspatialordertotheoldbackyardsandruinedbuildingsinRajskaandSzujskiegostreetsinKrakow.Thestartingpointwasamultifunctionalhall,whichwasenteredintotheoutlineoftheold,19th-centuryhorse-ridingarena,usedinthelastyearsofitshistoryasworkshopsandstoragespacefortheJuliuszSłowackiTheatreinKraków.

TheMałopolskaGardenofArtsisacrossbetweentwoinstitutions:theJuliuszSłowackiTheatreandtheMalopolskaVoivodeshipLibrary.ThewingonSzujskiegoStreetholdsamodernartandmedialibrary,withmultimediabooksandmusic,whilethesectionstandingonul.Rajskahasbeendevelopedbythetheatre,andisequippedwithamultifunctionaleventshall.Site

FLOORPLANThenewhall–operating,asastudiotheatre,conferenceroom,concerthall,andvenueforbanquetsandexhibitions–holdsretractablestagesfor300people.State-of-the-artstagetechnologyispresentoverhead:fixedonhoistsandcranestothesteelceilinggirders.Thisallowsdramasandconcertstobeperformed,andexhibitions,filmscreenings,symposiums,conferences,artauctions,fashionshows,andmanymoreeventstobeheld.ArchitectKrzysztofIngarden(collaboratingwithJacekEwý),claimsthattheformofthebuildingisacontextualgamebetween“mimesisandtheabstraction”.Inpractice,thismeansthatthebuildingisbynomeansasimulacrumofthecontext,butratherdrawsinspirationfromthecodeofcontextualformsbymakingreferencestothegeometryoftheroofsandtissueoftheneighbouringstructuresappliedfortheabstractgeometricalcompositionsofthefaçades.Thebuildingfitsthescaleofitsenvironmentperfectlybymaintainingthelinesoftheroofanddivisionsofthefaçadesinlinewiththecompositionandlinearsolutionsoftheneighbouringbuildings.Honingtheform,thearchitectsfocusedoninteractionwiththefuturerecipients,whichiswhytheentirespatialformofthesymbolic,openworkroofingraisedoverthegardenfromthesideofRajskaStreet–thoughnotfunctioningasanactualroof–istheretotransportthegatewaytothestageoutontothestreet.Inthisway,thebuildingdelicatelynudgespassers-bywiththeskilfulmanipulationoftheform,alreadyatfirstglancegivingtheonlookertheimpressionofgoingbeyondthebordersofagarden,wherecultureisgrowninevenlyplantedrows.Furtherproofofthesophisticatedplaywiththespaceisthegardenitself.Imitatingflowerbeds,theequalbandswithlowgreensareametaphorofagarden:asmuchasthearchitectscouldaffordhere.Anotablefactisthathistorically“ulicaRajska”–literally“ParadiseStreet”–ledtotheGardenofParadise,whichwaslaterreplacedbythedevelopmentsoftheTobaccoWorks.Thefinalimpactistheresultofthedesigners’sensitivitytosignalscomingfromtheenvironment.Forexample,theopeningintheperforatedroofofthegardenwasformed,especiallyforthemapletreethatgrowsthere.Inrecognitionofitsexquisitesenseofspatialcompositionandcreativeforminhistoricalcontext,thebuildingwasawardedwiththeProfessorJanuszBogdanowskiPrize,forthebestarchitecturalachievementinKrakowintheyear2023.Inthisplace,theculturallifeoftheKraków’syoungartisticsetwillblossomunderasharedroof.Modernballet,contemporarytheatreforms,audioandvideoarts,concerts,andallandanyotherartisticpursuitswillfindtheirhomehere.Togetherwiththetechnicalfurnishingofthestage,theconstructionprojectconsumedapproximatelyPLN47million,andwasco-financedfromEUfundsasapartoftheMałopolskaRegionalOperationalProgramme2023–2023.WYSPIAŃSKI2023PAVILIONRaisedin2023,thebuildingfillsthegapinthetissueofKraków’scitycentrethatemergedafterthedemolitionofthebuildingPodLipkąin1939.StandingonthecornerofGrodzkaStreetandWszystkichŚwiętych(AllSaints’)Square,situatedbytheRoyalRoutebetweentheMainMarketSquareandWawelCastle,surroundedwithhistoricalarchitecturedatingbackasfarasGothic.Thetwomainfunctionsofthebuilding,namely,toprovideinformationandtodisplaythestained-glasswindows,requireddistinctiveinteriorspaces.Thematerialusedestablishesadialoguewiththeneighbouringbuildings.Used
