AccordingtotheCDC,surveysbetween1986and1990foundnosignsofresistancetotheantibioticsinU.S.Campylobacterinfections.Butby1997,strainsresistanttotheantibioticsaccountedfor12percentofhumancases.In2001thefigureclimbedto18percent.

PublichealthexpertssaymanyfactorscontributetoCampylobacter'sdrugresistance;thewidespreaduseoffluoroquinolonunesbyU.S.poultryfarmersoverthepastdecadeisoneofthem.

FluoroquinoloneswerefirstapprovedforuseinhumansbytheU.S.FoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)in1986.In1995theFDAgrantedpoultryfarmerspermissiontotheusethedrugsinlivestock.LastyeartheFDAbannedtheantibioticfromfood-producinganimals,citingtheconcernsraisedbypublichealthexpertsoverdrag-resistantbacteria.
