Whenthesignalreachesathreshold,theneuronfires,sendingasignaltravelingalongtheaxontotheolfactorybulb,partofthelimbicsystemofthebrain.Interpretationofthesmellbegins,relatingthesmelltopastexperiencesandinrelationtothesubstance(s)emitted.Theolfactorybulbactsasarelaystationconnectingthenosetotheolfactorycortexinthebrain.Olfactoryinformationisfurtherprocessedandprojectedthroughapathwaytothecentralnervoussystem(CNS),whichcontrolsemotionsandbehavioraswellasbasicthoughtprocesses.Odorsensationusuallydependsontheconcentration(numberofmolecules)availabletotheolfactoryreceptors.Asingleodorantstimulustypeistypicallyrecognizedbymultiplereceptors,anddifferentodorantsarerecognizedbycombinationsofreceptors,thepatternsofneuronsignalsheltoidentifythesmell.Theolfactorysystemdoesnotinterpretasinglecompound,butinsteadthewholeodorousmix,notnecessarilycorrespondingtoconcentrationorintensityofanysingleconstituent.Thewidestrangeofodorsconsistsoforganiccompounds,althoughsomesimplecompoundsnotcontainingcarbon,suchashydrogensulfideandammonia,arealsoodorants.Theperceptionofanodoreffectisatwo-stepprocess.First,thereisthephysiologicalpart;thedetectionofstimulibyreceptorsinthenose.Thestimuliareprocessedbytheregionofthehumanbrainwhichisresponsibleforolfaction.Becauseofthis,anobjectiveandyticalmeasureofodorisimpossible.Whileodorfeelingsareveryalperceptions,individualreactionsarerelatedtogender,age,ofhealth, alCommonodorsthatpeopleareusedto,suchastheirownbodyodor,arelessnoticeabletoindividualsthanexternalor
