Resultsanddiscussion
Theload-displacementcurvesofsinglecrystalcopperandsiliconundervariousloadingratesareshowninFig.1.Bothmaterialsexhibitatypicalloading-unloadingbehavior,withawell-definedelasticregion,aplasticregionandaresidualdisplacementafterunloading.ThehardnessandelasticmodulusofcopperandsiliconasafunctionofdeptharepresentedinFig.2,obtainedfromtheCSMmeasurements.Itcanbeseenthatbothmaterialsbehaveverydifferentlyunderhighloadandload-rateeffects.
Forcopper,thehardnessincreasesdramaticallywithincreasingdepth,indicatingapronouncedstrainhardeningeffect.Theelasticmodulus,ontheotherhand,showsasignificantdecreasewithincreasingdepth,reflectingthepresenceofpile-updislocationsandstrainrelaxation.Underhighloadandhighrate,thehardnessandelasticmodulusincreasefurther,owingtothecomplexdislocationinteractionsanddislocationannihilationprocesses.AsshowninFig.3,theTEMimagesoftheindentedsurfaceofcopperrevealthepresenceofslipbands,stackingfaults,Lomer-Cottrelllocks,anddislocationtangles.Thedislocationsareheavilypiledupbeneaththebottomoftheindenter,formingdislocationcellsandsubgrains.
Forsilicon,thehardnessandelasticmodulusshowamoremoderateincreasewithdepth,comparedtocopper.TheTEMimagesoftheindentedsurfaceofsiliconrevealthepresenceofradialcracksandcleavageplanes,whichsuggestamorebrittledeformationanddamagebehavior.Thecrackinitiationandpropagationareobservedtobestronglydependentontheloadingrate,withhigherratesresultinginearliercrackinitiationandfastercrackpropagation.
