Followingatough2020,whenmarketuncertaintycausedbytheglobalCOVID-19pandemicresultedinaslowingdownoftheglobaltankcontainerbusiness,thepastyearhasseenasignificantrecoveryinthemarket,withahighdemandforequipmentbybothoperatorsandlessors.
Thereasonsfortheglobalcontainerindustry’ssupplychainproblemshavebeenwell-documentedinnewspapersandtradejournals.IncreasedvolumesfromawiderangeofcargoesfromAsia–aswellasspace-shortagesoncontainerships,portcongestionandinlandtransportdelays–theseareallfactorswhichhavecontributedtoincreasedtankcontainerdemandin2021.
Theseissues,andespeciallythecontainershipcapacityshortagefromAsiatothemainmarketsofNorthAmericaandEurope,haveledtosignificantlyincreasedfreightrates.Despitetheserateincreases,demandfortankshasneverthelesscontinuedtogrow.OnefactoristhatthehighfreightratesleadtoaneconomicneedtomaximisethequantityofcargoshippedwithinanISOcontainerslot,withthetankcontainertransportingabout60%morecargocomparedwithacontainerfilledwithdrums.
Thesignsfor2022arethattherewillbestrongdemandonallglobaltradelanes,butthechallengefortankoperatorstobookspaceoncontainershipscouldcontinuetocauseindustryproblems,assomeshippinglinesprioritise“carrier-ownedcontainers”ratherthan“shipper-ownedcontainers”(ietanksnotownedbythecarrier).
Atthetimeofpublishingthisyear’sITCOTankContainerFleetSurvey,therearenosignsofimprovementintheneartermfromtheproblemsofspaceshortageoncontainerships.Customerdemandremainsstrong,butmuchofthenewvesselcapacitywillnotbeintroducedintoserviceforatleastanotheryear.
Alongsidetheshortageofspaceon-boardcontainerships,thetankindustryalsofacesashortageoftankcontainercleaningandrepaircapacity,withinvestmentandexpansionoftankdepotsgenerallynotkeepinginlinewithglobaltankfleetexpansion.Driverrecruitmentfortankcontainerhaulierscontinuestobeaproblemfortheindustry.
Thedemandfornewtankshasresultedinsubstantialgrowthintheglobaltankcontainerfleetoverthepast12months
–with2021beingthethirdhighestfigureintermsofnewproduction.
Accordingtothisyear’sITCOSurveyoftheGlobalTankContainerMarketIn2021,atotalof53,285newtankcontainerswerebuilt,comparedto35,800tankcontainersthepreviousyear-anincreaseofsome17,485units.
Theworldwidetankcontainerfleetgrewby7.3percentin2021,comparedto5.3%in2020.
Thisyear’sSurveyestimatesthat,at1January2022,theglobaltankcontainerfleetstoodat737,935units,comparedto686,650tankson1January2021.
AsinpreviousEditions,thisSurveyisintendedtoanalysethegrowthintheworld’stankcontainerfleetandthedevelopmentoftankcontainersmanufacturingonayear-by-yearbasis.Itshowshow,numerically,theindustrycontinuestobedominatedonagloballevelbyarelativelysmallnumberofmajortankcontaineroperatorsandleasingcompanies.
Thetop10tankcontaineroperatorsaccountforover266,665tanks,representingsome60%oftheglobaltankcontaineroperators’fleet.Thetop10leasingcompaniesaccountfor275,050tanks,representingabout85%ofthetotalleasingfleet.
Tankcontainersownedbyshippers,beneficialcargoowners-andawiderangeofotherindustryplayers–amountto211,285tanks,anincreaseof6%over2021.Shippers/BCOsownmostlyspecialtanks,whileotherindustrysectorshavearangeofstandardsandspecials.
Basedonitssuccessfulgrowthinrecentyears,theindustryiscontinuingtoattractsmallerplayerstoenterthemarket–oftenoffering“niche”tankservicesinnichemarkets,suchassouth-eastAsia.However,existingoperatorsalsoreportagreateremphasisonthepartofshipperstovaluerelationshipsasameanstoforgeloyalty,qualityanddependablesuppliesoftanks,movingawayfromtheerraticspotmarketandon-linepricefocusedcompetitivebidding.
Asinpreviousyears,thisSurveyliststhosecompanieswhichareoperatingorleasingtankcontainerfleetsofover1000units.Companieswithtankcontainerfleetsoflessthan1000units,(about200companies)havenotbeennamedindividually,butan“educatedestimate”hasbeenmadeforthecombinedfleets.
TheInternationalTankContainerOrganisationwouldliketotakethisopportunitytothankthevariouscompanieswhohavecontributedtothisstudy.Yourinputandinformation,statisticsandideasareverymuchappreciated.

Tanksmightbe“idle”becausetheyareintheprocessofpreparationsuchasmaintenanceandtestingorintheprocessofbeingrepositionedtoademandareaorremainingasnewmanufacturestocks.
Thisnormallyrepresentsbetween10%and15%oftheleasingcompanyfleetatanyonetime.For2021,wehaveestimatedthefigureofidletankstobe12%oftheleasedfleet,

The“Shipper”fleetcomprisestanksownedorleased-inbyproducersofbulkcargoes,forshipmentintanks–especiallychemicalandfood/drinkscompanies.
Thesetanksmaybeoperatedbytheshipperthemselves,orbyanoperatorontheirbehalf
Thesetankscanbeunitsforspecificlogisticsoperations,dedicatedservicesorforusewithinacompany’sownproductionprocess.Theyarealsosometimes“special”tanks-manufacturedormodifiedtomeetaspecificneedandincludetanksdesignedtotransportliquefiedandrefrigeratedgases.

Someofthetanksdisposedfromoperatorandlessorfleetsmightbemodifiedandutilisedwithinthiscategory.

Tankcontainersarenormallydepreciatedoveraresiduallifeof20-25years-butoftenremaininserviceforalongerperiod.Operatorshaverecognisedthattheoperationallifeofthetankcanbeextended.Evidenceindicatesthattankscannowlastlonger
Theservicelifeofthetankcanbeextendedbyremanufactureorrefurbishment.Thisisanespeciallyviableoptionwhenthepriceofnewtanksisatahigherlevel.
Ownersmightdisposeoftankcontainersforcommercialandtechnicalreasons.Thesemightberepurposedintootheruses,suchasstorage.
Sometanksaresoldforre-cyclingasscrapmetal,especiallyifthetankisseriouslydamagedbeyondeconomicrepair.
Scrapmightbeaviableeconomicoptionwhenthecommercialpriceofscrapstainlesssteelrises.
Precisedataabouttankdisposalandscrappingisdifficulttoresearch.Forthisyear’ssurvey,wehaveestimatedanominalfigureof3000tanksbeingscrappedin2021,whichislowcomparedtopreviousyears

In2021,thecombinednumberoftankcontainersproducedbyalloftheworld’smanu-facturerstotalledover53,300newunits.
TankContainermanufacturingisconcentratedinChina.TheonlyotherlargevolumemanufacturerisbasedinSouthAfrica.
TheleadingTankContainerManufacturersproducingthehighestnumberoftanksareasfollows:CIMC,NTTank,JJAP,WelfitOddy,SingamasandDalianCRRC.Thesetopsixrepresent97%ofglobalmanufacture.
Themajorityofunitsproducedbythesetopsixcompaniesarestandardindustrytanksrange.Nevertheless,thereareatleast10furthercompaniesbuildingawiderangeofspecialisedtanks,includingswap-tanks,semi-specials,gasandcryogenictanks.

Webelievethisdatawillproveveryusefulforourmemberswhoarenowbeingrequestedtoprovideinformationonthesustainabilityoftankcontainers.
Duringthepastyear,becauseofthepandemic,wehavenotedthatolder,smallercapacity,tankcontainersarenotbeingscrappedatthepreviousrate.Inmanycases,theyarebeingrepairedandputbackintoservicebecauseofthehighdemandfortheequipment.Inadditionmanyofthemmayevenbere-manufacturedifthepriceofnewtankscontinuestoincreaseatthecurrenthighlevelthroughthiscurrentyear.

Theglobaltankcontainerfleetcomprisesarangeoftanktypesincludingtanksforliquids,liquefiedgases,powders,swaptanksandspecials.Tanksbelow20ftlengthsuchasthosetypicaloftheoffshoreoilindustryarenotincludedinthisSurvey.
Thetankcontainerishighlyregulatedandisrequiredtomeetstringentstandardsofoperation,includingstatutoryperiodicinspectionandrenewaloftestcertification.However,thereisnoglobalregisteroftankcontainers.Datamustbecollectedbysystematicallyrequestingtankownersandoperatorstoprovidecompanyfleetnumbersandmanufacturerstoreportnewproduction.Wherefirmdataisnotprovided,thisSurveyprovidesestimatesbasedoninternetresearchandconsultationwithexperiencedindustryrepresentatives.
