Totesttherolethatemotionplaysinforminglong-lastingopinions,theresearchersconductedseven

independentstudiesinvolvingmorethan20,000participantsinvariousreal-worldsituations.

Thefirstsurvey,whichwasconductedthedayafterChristmas,measuredfeelingsaboutrecentlyreceived

gifts.Theparticipantsweregivenalistofadjectives(形容词)todescribetheiropinionstowardtheirgifts.

Adjectiveslike"worthwhile11wereassociatedwithapracticalreactiontothegift,whilewordslike"delighlful”

weremorestronglyassociatedwithanemotionalreaction.Onemonthlater,theparticipantscompleteda

follow-upsurveytotesttheendurance(持久性)oftheiropinions.Theresultsshowedthatthestrongerthe

positiveemotionalreaction,themorelikelythatopinionremainedfixedonemonthlater.

Inthefinaltest,participantsreadoneoftwomessagesaboutanimaginaryseaanimal.Onemessage

containedbroad-rangingfactsabouttheanimal(low-emotioncondition).Theothermessagewasabouta

swimmer'sunderwaterinteractionwiththeanimal(high-emotioncondition).Theparticipantsinthe

high-emotionconditionshowedsignificantlylesschangeintheiropinionsacrosstime.
