together.Oneusuallydoesn’thavetodecide,forinstance,whethertobehappyortobegood.Weareconstituted

sothatsimpleactsofkindness,suchasgivingtocharityorexpressinggratitude,haveapositiveeffectonourlong-termmoods.Thekeytothehappylife,itseems,isthegoodlife,alifewithsustained

toshort-termimpulsesoftendoawfulthings,suchasdrivingdrunkorbeatinguptheirchildren.Theywouldbebetteroffiftheirlong-termselveshadcontrol,andcouldblockanddistracttheseshort-termchoices.Butoftenthesituationisflipped,andit’sthelong-termselfthat’smisguided.Itcanbecomecommittedtobeliefsystemsthathaveimmoralconsequences.5Terrorismandgenocide,forinstance,aretypicallydeliberatechoices,notactsofpassion;it’sthelong-termselfthat’stheguiltyone.Indeed,peopleoftenhavetoforcethemselvestocommitterribleacts;theyhavetoworktodefythenaturalandlegitimate

atthe“unaccountablepleasure”thatspectatorsofatragedyfeelfromsorrow,terror,andanxiety:“Themoretheyaretouchedandaffected,themoretheyaredelightedwiththespectacle.”9〔Note8〕

anduplifted.Negativeemotionsdon’tburstoutofus;theysimmer
