Goodmorning.WellcontinuewithourintroductionofAmericanminorities.TodaysfocusisonChineseAmericans.FormanyyearsitwascommonintheUnitedStatestoassociateChineseAmericanswithrestaurantsandlaundries.PeopledidnotrealizethattheChinesehadbeendrivenintotheseoccupationsbytheprejudiceanddiscriminationthatusedtofacetheminthiscountry.ThefirstgroupofChinesecameduringtheCaliforniaGoldRushof1849.Likemostoftheotherpeoplethere,theyhadcometosearchforgold.Inthatlargelyunoccupiedland,theystatedaclaimforthemselvesbyplacingmarkersintheground.However,eitherbecausetheChineseweresodifferentfromtheothersorbecausetheysopatientlythattheysometimessucceededinturningaseeminglyworthlessminingclaimintoaprofitableone,theybecamethescapegoatsoftheirenviouscompetitors.Theywereharassedinmanyways.Oftentheywerepreventedworkingontheirclaims;somelocalitiesevenpassedregulationsforbiddingthemtoownclaims.Therefore,theseChinesehadtoseekoutotherwaysofearningaliving.Someofthembegantodothelaundryforthewhiteminers;otherssetupsmallrestaurants.TherewerealmostnowomeninCaliforniainthosedays,andtheChinesefilledarealneedbydoingthis“womanswork”.Someotherswenttoworkasfarmhandsorasfishermen.Intheearly1860s,asecondgroupofChinesearrivedinCalifornia.Thistime,theywereimportedasworkcrewstoconstructthefirsttranscontinentalrailroad.Theworkwassostrenuousanddangerous,anditwascarriedoninsucharemotepartofthecountry,thattherailroadcompanycouldnotfindotherlaborersforthejob.Asinthecaseoftheirpredecessors,theseChinesewerealmostallmalesandtheyencounteredagreatdealofprejudice.Thehostilitygrewespeciallystrongaftertherailroadprojectwascompleted,andtheimportedlaborersreturnedtoCalifornia,alloutofwork.Becausethereweresomanymoreofthemthistime,theseChinesedrewevenmoreattentionthantheearliergroupdid.Theyweresodifferentineveryaspect:intheirphysicalappearance,intheirlanguage,andintheirreligion.Theywerecontemptuouslycalled“heathenChinese”.Whentimeswerehard,theywereblamedforworkingforlowerwagesandtakingjobsawayfromwhitemen.Andthesewhitemenwereactuallyrecentimmigrantsthemselves.Anti-Chineseriotsbrokeoutinmanycities.Someevendevelopedintoarsonandbloodshed.TheChinesewerenotallowedtomakelegalappealsandtheywerenotacceptedasAmericancitizens.CaliforniansbegantodemandthatnomoreChinesebepermittedtoentertheirstate.Finally,in1882,theCongresspassedtheChineseExclusionAct,whichstoppedtheimmigrationofChineselaborers.ManyChinesereturnedtotheirhomeland,andtheirnumbersdeclinedsharplyintheearlypartofthiscentury.However,duringWorldWarTwo,whenChinawasanallyoftheUnitedStates,theExclusionlawswereended;asmallnumberofChinesewereallowedtoimmigrateeachyear,andChinesecouldbecomeAmericancitizens.In1965,inageneralrevisionofourimmigrationlaws,manymoreChinesewerepermittedtosettlehere.Fromthestart,theChinesehadlivedapartintheirownseparateneighborhoods,whichcametobeknownas“Chinatowns.Ineachofthemtheresidentsorganizedanunofficialgovernmenttomakerulesforthecommunityandtosettledisputes.Manypeoplecouldntfindjobsontheoutside,andtheywentintobusinessforthemselves,primarilytoservetheirownneighborhood.Asforlaundriesandrestaurants,someofthemsoonspreadtootherpartsofthecity,sincesuchservicescontinuedtobeindemandamongnon-Chinese,too.Tothisday,certainChinatowns,especiallythoseofSanFranciscoandNewYork,areverybusy,thrivingcommunities.TheyhavebecomegreatattractionsfortouristsandforthosewhoenjoyChinesefood.MostoftodaysChineseAmericansarethedescendantsofsomeoftheearlyminersandrailroadworkers.ThoseimmigrantshadbeenuneducatedfarmlaborersinthevicinityofCantoninSoutheastChinabeforetheycametoAmerica.Evenafterhavinglivedhereforseveralgenerations,ChineseAmericansretainmanyaspectsoftheirancientculture.Forexample,theirfamilytiescontinuetoberemarkablystrong.Membersofthefamilylendeachothermoralsupportandalsopracticalhelpwhennecessary.Fromaveryyoungagechildrenaretaughtwiththeoldvaluesandattitudes,includingrespectfortheireldersandafeelingofresponsibilitytothefamily.Thishelpstoexplainwhythereissolittlejuveniledelinquencyamongthem.Thehighregardforeducation,andthewillingnesstoworkveryhardtogainadvancement,areothernoteworthycharacteristicsoftheirs.Thisexplainswhysomanydescendantsofuneducatedlaborershavesucceededinbecomingdoctors,lawyers,andotherprofessionals.Bytheway,manyofthemostoutstandingChineseAmericanscholars,scientists,andartistsaremorerecentarrivals.TheycomefromChinasformerupperclassandtheyrepresentitshighculturaltraditions.ChineseAmericansmakeuponlyatinyfractionoftheAmericanpopulation.TheylivechieflyinCalifornia,NewYork,andHawaii.AsAmericanattitudestowardminoritiesandtowardethnicdifferenceshavechangedinrecentyears,thelong-hatedChinesehavegainedwideacceptance.Today,theyaregenerallyadmiredformanyremarkablecharacteristics,andareoftenheldupasanexampleworthfollowing.Andtheirnumerouscontributionstotheiradoptedlandaremuchappreciated.Now,wearecomingtotheendofourlecture.OurfocusfornextweekwillbeonAfricanAmericans.Thankyouforyourattention.
