eoxidisedonlyafteractivityceases.Anaerobicmetabolismseverelylimitsburstsofpoikilothermicactivitytoafewminutes,becauseofphysicalexhaustion.Thistendancytobecomeexhaustedisonereasonthatsomanypredatoryterrestrialpoikilotherms,suchassnakesandalligators,securepreybyambushratherthanbychase.Becausetheydonotdependoninternallygeneratedbodyheat,poikilothermscanreducemetabolicactivityduringperiodsoftemperatureextremesandoffoodorwatershortage.Lowenergydemandsenablepoikilothermstocolonizeareasoflimitedfoodandwater,suchasdeserts.Becausetheydonothavetheproblemofmetabolicheatloss,poikilothermsarenotlimitedtoanyminimumsizeordefiniteshape.Manyaresinglecelled,suchasparameciaandamoebas;otherssuchasearthworms,millipedes,andsnakeshavecylindricalbodies.Suchcharacteristicsenablepoikilothermstoexploitresourcesandhabitatsunavailabletohomeotherms.Ontheotherhand,thesamemetabolicrestrictionsimposedanuppersizelimit:poikilothermswouldnotbeabletoobsorbenoughheattowarmaverylargebody.Forthisreason,somepaleontologistsarguethatlargedinosaurshadtobeendothermic(maintainingaconstantbodytemperaturebymeansofmetabolism).Acounterargumentisthatlargeectothermscoulddevelopandmaintainbodytemperaturesaboveairtemperaturesinatropicalenvironmentbecausetheirlowsurface-to-volumeratiowouldlimitcooling.Althoughpoikilothermsasagroupdonothavealowerlimittobodysize,sizeisneverthelessanimportantaspectoftheirlife.Therateofheatingandcoolinginapoikilothermdecreasesasthesizeincreases.Becauseofitssmallsize,abeetleheatsandcoolsquickly,butrarelycanitraiseitsuniformtemperatureabovethatofthesurroundingenvironmentaltemperature.However,itdoeshavetheabilitytocontrolitstemperaturebymovinginandoutofthesunlig
