39、 past. What he particularlywantedtoinvestigatewashowichthyosaursadaptedtotheproblemof decompressionover the150 million years. To this end, he and his colleagues traveled the worlds natural-history museums, looking at hundreds of ichthyosaurs fromthe Triassic period and fromthe later Jurassic andCret

40、aceousperiods.When he started, he assumed that signs of the bends would be rarer in younger fossils,reflectingtheir gradual evolutionof measurestodeal withdecompression. Instead, hewasastonishedtodiscover theopposite. Morethan15%of Jurassic andCretaceous ichthyosaurs hadsufferedthe bends before they

49、n, Twains most widelyreadtale. Onceupona time, people hatedthe bookbecause it struckthemas rude. Twainhimself wrotethat thosewhobannedthebookconsideredthenovel “trashandsuitableonlyfor the slums(贫民窟). More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim, the escapedslave, andmanyocc
