7、everyyearsjobfairheldonthecampusofthePolytechUniversity,morethan200positionscompetefor60-oddgraduatingstudents.Undersuchcircumstances,undergraduatestudentsintheirfifthyeararealsoinhighdemandforinternshipatvariousconstructioncompaniesanddesigninstitutes.Virtuallyeverystudentgetsafullworkloadimmediate

8、lyuponstartingtheinternshipandassumesconsiderableresponsibilitiessoonafterwards.Ibecametheluckiestamongtheluckybywinningarareopportunityforanycivilengineer:toparticipateinthedesignoftheBeijingWesternRailwayStation,thelargesturbanstructureinChinauptodate.ThishappenedwhileIinterned,alongwithfiveothers

9、choolmates,attheBeijingArchitecturalInstitute.ThisinstitutehasdesignedvirtuallyallthemodernlandmarkbuildingsinChina,includingthefamousGreatHallofthePeopleandtheMuseumofRevolutionaryHistoryontheTiananmenSquare,theBeijingRailwayStationandtheAsianGamesVillage.ItwasonthestrengthofmyacademicmeritsthatIgo

10、ttoenjoytheseopportunities.TheWesternstationprojectinBeijingconsistedofthemailhall(70,000squaremeters),southwingbuildinggroup(40,000squaremeters)andnorthwingbuildinggroup(35,000squaremeters).Mytaskwastoassistinthedesignofashoppingcentreinthesouthwingwhichhad16,000squaremeters.Iindependentlyaccomplis

11、hedaquarterofthedesignforthewholebuilding,mainlyresponsibleforthefoundationdesign,calculationanddrawingofsteeldistributionofbeam,floor,columnsandconcretepiles.IcherishedthisopportunitytoapplytheknowledgeIhadlearnedintheclassroomtotherealworldproblemsandIworkedwithmyutmostdedication.I,however,soonfou

12、ndoutthat,eveninthismonumentalproject,designtechniquesappliedinmanycasesleftmuchtobedesired.Whentreatingthewindload,theearthquakeforceandtheeffectoffrozensoil,historicaldataandintelligentestimateswereusedinplaceofaccuratemeasuring.Thisphenomenonmademedeterminedtoimprovemyknowledgeandskillsinagraduat

13、eprogramthatcanteachsophisticatedknow-how,suchasyours.Itregrettablyturnedoutthatthedesignofthemailhallwasseriouslyflawed,whichdrewintensemediaattentionnationwide.Thestructuresanktwometersaftercompletion.Asexpertscontinuetohelpthecourtdeterminewhoisresponsible,Imyselfhavebeenawedbythisdramaandkeptres

14、earchingiteversinceitbecameknown.Mytentativeexplanation,submittedtotakeintoaccounttheundergroundwaterspowerofbuoyancy,eventhoughthestructurebasewasputbelowthewaterbed.Thestructurefloateduntilenoughloadwasmounted.Theproperconstructionmethodthereforeshouldhaveinvolvedartificialprecipitationuntilthecom

15、pletionofstructure.Upongraduationin1996,IjoinedtheBeijingBiggestCo.,oneofthefourlargestconstructioncompaniesinChina,andimmediatelytookonmanagementdutiesasanassistantmangerattheconstructionsite.Ihavesupervisedsteelengineering,concreteengineeringandplatformengineeringfortheretwenty-threestorybuildings

16、intheBeijingDDresidentialarea,atotalof60,000squaremetersinapartments.Inthiscapacity,Iwascompelledtolearnmanagementskillswhichhadneverbeentaughtintheclassroom.AlthoughconstructionmanagementisnotwhatIforeseetobealifetimepursuit,Iexecutedmydutymeticulouslyandcreatively.Ibecamethefirstconstructionsitema

17、nagerinthecompanytoconductexperimentscomparingbox-weirmaintenanceandthetraditionalmanualwateringmethod.Byusingbox-weirmethod,weakconcreteandcracksintheconcretewereeliminated.Throughtheseimportant,albeitsmall,stepsofimprovement,Ihavederivedimmensesatisfaction.Myvigorousacademictrainingandexposuretoin

18、tricatedesignproblemsandcomplexconstructionmanagementissueshasstoodmeingoodsteadprofessionallycomparedtomypeers.Myplantofurthermycareerthroughadvancedstudiesstemsfromself-confidenceinmyacademiccalibreandalsoastrongdesiretosolvedesignandconstructionproblemsencounteredatwork.Ihaveresearchedyourprogram
