Section Use of EnglishDirections:For each numbered blank in the following passage, there are four choices marked A,B,Cand D.Choose the best one and put your choice in the ANSWER SHEET. (15 points)The key to the industrialization of space is the U.S. space shuttle. _1_ it, astro

、nauts will acquire a workhouse vehicle _2_ of flying into space and returning many times. _3_ by reusable rockets that can lift a load of 65,000 pounds, the shuttle will carry devices for scientific inquiry, as _4_ as a variety of military hardware. _5_ more significantly, it will _6_ materials and

、machines into space for industrial purposes _7_ two decades ago when “sputnik” (artificial satellite) was _8_ to the vocabulary. In short, the _9_ importance of the shuttle lies in its _10_ as an economic tool. What makes the space shuttle _11_ is that it takes off like a rocket but lands like an air

、plane. _12_, when it has accomplished its _13_, it can be ready for _14_ trip in about two weeks. The space shuttle, the worlds first true spaceship, is a magnificent step _15_ making the impossible possible for the benefit and survival of man.1. A In BOn CBy D With解析 本题考核知识点:介词的用法。

、pace shuttle。 但by表示动作、行为的方式,如:to pay by cheque用支票付款;to travel by plane乘飞机旅行。

、aving or carrying sth有,具有,带有,如:With your help, I might finish the work ahead of time. Our noses

、are capable of detecting human smells even when these are diluted to far below one part in one million. This program is not suitable for children. It was a meal

、 fit for a king. Hes efficient at his job.

Ill drive you to as far as the theatre. as well as意为in addition to“除. She is a talented musician as well as being a photographer.

as much as意为“最多”,表示量,如:He doesnt earn as much as I do. as long as意为only if“只要”或since“由于”,如:Well go as long as the weather is good. As long as there is a demand for these drugs, the financial incentive for drug dealers will be there.

First cook the onions, then add the mus

、hrooms. She s been very busy at work and then there was all that trouble with her son. Why dont you hire a car? Then you ll be able to visit more of the area. Hurry up or youll be late. Dso表示因果关系,如:It was s

、nowing, and so I could not go out.

Shall I add your name to the list? Not all that shift can be attributed to the movement out of the snowbelt, census officials sa

、y. Her work has contributed much to our understanding of this difficult subject. The new technology was applied to farming.

exceptional意为unusual and likely not to happen often,侧重“例外”。 unique 意为very special or unusual,强调“独特”。 12. A

It was already rather late, thus we decide to go home. Wise men love tru

、th, whereas fools shun it. The experiment failed. It was, nevertheless, worth making. She is vain and foolish, and yet people like her.

、trip, a subsequent trip。15. a big/magnificent step in doing经常被用来表示“在方面取得了重大突破”。

Part Reading ComprehensionPart ADirections:Each of the passages

Put your choice in the ANSWER SHEET.(30 points)Passage 1It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of

、modern life, but manners on the roads are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel. It is all very well, again, to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the drivers seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog, the rude

、and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule. Many drivers nowadays dont even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical exampl

、 The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learnt to filter correctly in

、to traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper. Unfortunately, modern motorists cant even learn to drive, let alone master the subtler aspects of roadsmanship. Years ago the experts warned us that the car ownership explosion would demand a lot more

、give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart. 16. According to this passage, troubles on the road are pri

、marily caused by_.16. A peoples attitude towards the road-hogA B the rhythm of modern lifeB C the behavior of the driverC

17.The sentence “You might tolerate the odd road-hog.the rule.”(Para.1) implies that_

You might tolerate the odd road-hog the rule说明_。A our society is unjust towards well-mannered motoristsA B rude drivers can be met only occasionallyB C the well-mannered motorist cannot tolerate the road-hogC D nowadays impolite drivers constitut

、e the majority of motoristsD exception to the rule D 是the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule的改写,表达相同的意思,所以为正确选项。 18. By “good sense”, the writer means_.18. A the drivers

、 ability to understand and react reasonablyA B the drivers prompt response to difficult and severe conditionsB C the drivers tolerance of rude or even savage behaviorC D the drivers acknowledgment of politeness and regulationsD

19. Experts have long pointed out th

、at in the face of car-ownership explosion, _.19. A road users should make more sacrificeA B drivers should be ready to yield to each otherB Cdrivers should have more communication among themselvesC Ddrivers will suffer great loss if they pay no

考生根据本合成词的构成很容易猜测出give-and-take 意为:互相让步,互相迁就(make mutual concessions),B中的yield to each other即为此意,所以为正确选项。20. In the writers opinion, _.20. Astrict traff

C rude drivers should be punishedC 野蛮的司机应该受到惩罚D drivers should avoid traffic jamsD 司机应该避免交通阻塞分析 本题考核知识点:作者观点题。

A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgment in response to an act of politeness helps tocreate an atmosphe

、re of goodwill and tolerance so necessary in modern traffic conditions. A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgehelps to create and atmosphere of. 介词短语in response to politeness 是wave of acknowledgment的后置定语,形容词短语so necessaryconditions 是an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance的后置定语。

Typical examples are the driver who brakes violently to allow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic, when a few seconds later the road would be clear anyway; or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into

、the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time.本句主干为:typical examples are the driveror the man,两个名词the driver 和the man之后分别接有定语从句who brakesbe clear anyway和who wavesstop in time做后置定语。第一个定语从句中嵌套了一个状语从句:when a few seconds laterclear anyway;第二个定语从句中嵌套了另外一个定语从句thatstop in time,为oncoming

词汇:road hog 驾车乱抢路的人go a long way:to help very much i

Passage 2In the atmosphere, carbon dioxide acts rather like a one-way mirrorthe glass in the roof of a greenhouse which allows the suns rays to enter but prevents the heat from escaping.According to a weather experts prediction, the atmosphere will be 3C warmer in the year 2

、050 than it is today, if man continues to burn fuels at the present rate. If this warming up took place, the ice caps in the poles would begin to melt, thus raising sea level several metres and severely flooding coastal cities. Also, the increase in atmospheric temperature would lead to great change

、s in the climate of the northern hemisphere, possibly resulting in an alteration of the earths chief food-growing zones. In the past, concern about a man-made warming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic is much colder and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather exp

、erts are now paying more attention to West Antarctic, which may be affected by only a few degrees of warming: in other words, by a warming on the scale that will possibly take place in the next fifty years from the burning of fuels.Satellite pictures show that large areas of Antarctic ice are alread

、y disappearing. The evidence available suggests that a warming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms the earth. However, most of the fuel is burnt in the northern hemisphere, where temperatures seem to be falling. Scientists conclude, therefore, that up to now natural influe

、nces on the weather have exceeded those caused by man. The question is: Which natural cause has most effect on the weather? One possibility is the variable behavior of the sun. Astronomers at one research station have studied the hot spots and “cold” spots (that is, the relatively less hot spots) on

、the sun. As the sun rotates, every 27.5 days, it presents hotter or “colder” faces to the earth, and different aspects to different parts of the earth. This seems to have a considerable effect on the distribution of the earths atmospheric pressure, and consequently on wind circulation. The sun is al

、so variable over a long term: its heat output goes up and down in cycles, the latest trend being downward.Scientists are now finding mutual relations between models of solar-weather interactions and the actual climate over many thousands of years, including the last Ice Age. The problem is that the

、models are predicting that the world should be entering a new Ice Age and it is not. One way of solving this theoretical difficulty is to assume a delay of thousands of years while the solar effects overcome the inertia(惯性)of the earths climate. If this is right, the warming effect of carbon dioxide

、 might thus be serving as a useful counte-balance to the suns diminishing heat.

21.It can be concluded that a concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would_.21. A prevent the suns rays from reaching the earths surfaceA B mean a warming up in the ArcticB C account for great changes in the climate in the northern hemisph

D raise the temperature of the earths surfaceD
