24、ns of the North American continent, living conditions can be extreme and few people have been able to adapt to living there. One race of people, however, have been able to adapt - the Eskimos (爱斯基摩人). They belong to the same race of people as the native North Americans and some Asians, and like them

25、, they have similar physical features - straight black hair, high cheek bones and wide faces. Except for the Eskimos, most people would find living difficult in this part of the world. For much of the year, the land is one large blanket of ice and snow, and temperatures sometimes drop as low as - 51

26、 degrees C. Even the land on the southern borders remains frozen most of the year. But in summer, when the sun begins to melt the uppermost layer of ice, the soil softens and many plants and flowers begin to grow. Trees, on the other hand, are unable to grow because the soil below this top layer rem

But here, from the middle of October to the middle of February, it is dark except for the light from the stars and the moon. From the middle of April to the middle of August
