They spend about 10 billion dollars a year to buy, fee
12、d and care for them. Many Americans also own larger animals such as horses. They spend about 13 billion dollars a year on them. Why? If you ask the animal owners, the answer probably would be emotional.Scientists are looking for a more scientific answer. Much of the research is being done at the Uni
13、versity of Pennsylvania. Scientists there have watched hundreds of people play with small animals.Some of the people were healthy, some were disabled and some were very sick. Perhaps the most important observation was the physical effect the animals had on most of the people. The animals seemed to c
14、alm the people who touched and talked to them. The humans blood pressure actually dropped. In another study researchers followed the progress of a group of heart attack victims. Some of the patients had animals, some did not. About 30 percent of those who did not have animals died of another heart a
15、ttack within one year. 90 percent of those who had animals did not have a second heart attack.How can animals make such a difference? Aron Catche, head of the University of Pennsylvania Research Center says scientists do not fully understand the physical interaction between humans and animals. But h
16、e says it is clear that animals feel a basic psychological need, the need to touch. Dr. Catche says humans like other mammals, develop a sense of security through touching and holding. Those who live alone, however, or who are sick or disabled may have trouble getting close to other people. They fee
17、l they might be criticized or rejected because of their condition. In these cases an animal can provide a better sense of security. Animals do not care if their owners are old or sick, or misshapen. They ask for little and they return kindness with loyalty. Dr. Catche says a strong relationship with
