2、overage”airshowerdetectorcurrentlyunderconstructioninTibet,China.Oneofthemaingoalsofthisexperimentistosearchforpossiblegamma-raybursts(GRBs)withE10GeV.Inthiswork,thesensitivityinobservingaGRB(withacertainsignicance)byARGOisfoundtobedependentontheuxoftheGRB,theslopeandtheenergycutoofitsspectrum,aswel

3、lasitstimedurationandthezenithangleattheobservation.KeywordsYBJ-ARGOexperiment,GRBs,sensitivity1IntroductionGRB,aviolentenergyreleaseatunpredictabledicttheexistenceofhigherenergyGRBs.How-ever,mostup-to-dateknownGRBswereobservedinenergyrangebetweenseveralkeVandseveralMeVandtheonlyexceptionisfromEGRET

4、onaboardtheCGROwhichhasdetectedGeVphotonsinco-incidencewith3BATSEGRBs.Inordertounder-standthecompletepictureoftheprocess,itisimpor-tanttoimprovethesamplestatisticsofhighenergyGRBsandtomeasuretheirmulti-bandwidthenergyspectrum.Theground-basedAS(airshower)exper-imentspossessmanyadvantagessuchaswideeld

5、ofviewandhighdutycycle,therefore,areespeciallysuitableforGRBdetection.ComparedwithmanyexistingASarrays,ARGOhastwoadditionaladvan-tages:highaltitudeandfullcoverage,withwhichthethresholdenergyofARGOissignicantlydecreasedandARGOisexpectedtohavehighersensitivityindetectingGRBsthanotherASarrays.Inthiswor

6、k,westudytheARGOsensitivityindetectingGRBswithphotonenergiesgreaterthan10GeVforthecasesofdierentpowerlawindexesandcutoenergies,aswellasthezenithanglesofGRBsintheARGOseldofview.3timeandfromunpredictableskydirection,thoughhavinghadmorethan30yearshistorysinceitsrstdiscovery,isstilloneofthemostmysteriou

7、sastronomicalphenomena.ThesatelliteexperimentBATSEonaboardtheCGROlaunchedin1991hasfoundthousandsofGRBs,aboutoneperdayonav-erage.TheirresultsshowedthatthearrivaldirectionofGRBsishighlyisotropicanditsupportsGRBsoriginatcosmologicaldistance.Furthermore,theaccuratelocationofGRBswithX-rayafterglowob-serv

8、ationbyBeppoSAXsatellitemanifestedthatatleastpartofGRBswasindeedoriginatedfromcosmo-logicaldistance.Now,severalsatelliteexperimentssuchasHETE,INTEGRALandSwiftaresearchingforGRBswithenergiesfromkeVtoMeV.Atthesametime,theoreticalstudiesaregoingonveryac-tively.Thoughmuchprogresshasbeenachievedfrombothe
