The Shadowland of DreamsPre-readingAlex Haley (August 11, 1921 February 10, 1992) an African- American w

2、riter. He is best known as the author of Roots: The Saga of an American Family and the co-author of The Autobiography of Malcolm X(马尔科姆艾克斯(19251965,美国黑人领袖)). Haley was born in New York on August 11, 1921, and was the oldest of three brothers and a sister. Alex Haley was enrolled at Alcorn State Univ

3、ersity (艾尔康州立大学)at age 15. Two years later he returned to his parents to inform them of his withdrawal from college. His father felt that he needed discipline and growth and convinced him to enlist in the military when he turned 18. On May 24, 1939, Alex Haley began his twenty-year enlistment with t

4、he Coast Guard(海岸警卫队队员). After his retirement from the Coast Guard, Haley began his writing career, and eventually became a senior editor for Readers Digest(读者文摘). The Autobiography of Malcolm Xpublished in 1965, was Haleys first book. It describes the trajectory trdekt()r of Malcolm Xs life from st

5、reet criminal to national spokesman for the Nation of Islam(伊斯兰民族组织) to his conversion to Sunni(逊尼派) Islam. It also outlines Malcolm Xs philosophy of black pride, black nationalism, and pan-Africanism(黑色的骄傲,黑人民族主义,泛非主义).Roots In 1976, Haley published Roots: The Saga of an American Family, a novel ba

6、sed on his familys history, starting with the story of Kunta Kinte, kidnapped in The Gambia (冈比亚) in 1767 and to be sold as a slave. Haley claimed to be a seventh-generation descendant dsend()nt of Kunta Kinte, and Haleys work on the novel involved ten years of research, intercontinental travel and

7、writing. Roots was eventually published in 37 languages, and Haley became a popular writer, and won the Pulitzer Prize. Roots was also adapted into a popular television miniseries (集数少的电视连续剧)that year. The serial reached a record-breaking 130 million viewers. Roots emphasized that African Americans

8、have a long history. Many people cherish the fond dream of becoming a writer but not many are able to see their dream come true. Alex Haley also wanted to be a writer and he succeeded.
