20、standhumorist,whowonaworldwideaudienceforhisstoriesoftheyouthfuladventuresofTomSawyerandHuckleberryFinn.ClemenswasbornonNovember30,1835inFlorida,Missouri,ofaVirginianfamily.HewasbroughtupinHannibal,Missouri.ThelifeofwhichcontributedtotheconstructionofthefictionaltownofSt.PetersburginTheAdventuresofT
21、omSawyerandAdventuresofHuckleberryFinn.Afterhisfather'sdeathin1847,hewasapprenticedtoaprinterandwroteforhisbrother'snewspaper.AndlaterHeworkedasalicensedMississippiriver-boatpilot,whichprovidedhimwithsufficientmaterialsforhimandinspiredhimtothecreationofmanygreatworks.TheCivilWarputanendtoth
22、esteamboattrafficandClemensmovedtoVirginiaCity,whereheeditedtheTerritorialEnterprise.OnFebruary3,1863,'MarkTwain'wasbornwhenClemenssignedahumoroustravelaccountwiththatpseudonym.In1864TwainleftforCalifornia,andworkedinSanFranciscoasajournalist.Therehegothisfirstsuccessasawriterforhishumoroust
23、alltale.HevisitedHawaiiasacorrespondentforTheSacramentoUnion,publishinglettersonhistripandgivinglectures.ThenHesetoutonaworldtour,travelinginFranceandItaly.Histraveloguewasrecordedin1869inTheInnocentsAbroad,whichgainedhimwidepopularity,andpokedfunatbothAmericanandEuropeanprejudicesandmanners.Thesucc
