2、the Northeastern United States, in southeastern New York State, approximately halfway between Washington, D.C. and Boston. The location at the mouth of the Hudson River, which feeds into a naturally sheltered harbor and then into the Atlantic Ocean, has helped the city grow in significance as a trad

Much of New York is built on the three islands of Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island, making land scarce and encouraging a high population density .The city covers about 1200 square kilometers,but 35% of that is water.$ New York city is divided into five areas called boroughs. These

4、 are Brooklyn, the Bronx, Mahattan, Queens and Staten Island. Only the Bronx is connected to the United States mainland.The others are surrounded by three rivers and New York Bay.$People New York is the most populous city in the United States. As of the 2010 United States census,the citys population

5、 stood at a record high of 8,175,133, a 2.1% increase from the 8 million counted in 2000. It has been the countrys largest city since 1790.History$ New Nork played a pivotal role during the Revolutionary War. The battle of Saratoga was the turning point of the war. Millions came through Castle Clinton in Battery Park before Ellis Island opened in 1892 to welcome millions more. The Statue of Liberty opened in 1886 and become a symbol of hope
