4、25 A Comparison between Female “Old Images” in Jane Eyre and “New Images ” in Gone with the Wind Abstract:Jane Eyre is the masterpiece of 19 century English female writer Bronte Charlotte,and it tells a story about love and womens dignity .Gone with the Wind is created by Mitchell Margaret,a famous

5、American female writer ,which is a novel related to reflect the Civil War of America.However,both of them have something similar.Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind are love stories,the two heroines in Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind are independent women and they are different from other women in the

6、 Victorian times.They no longer adhere to men.In addition,they have their own thought and fight with society and fate in the process of self-fulfillment.But after comparing these two novels we can know that the heroines have differences.Although Jane has the courage to struggle with the fate she sti

7、ll maintains the female old images,Scarlett OHara totally gets rid of the restriction of the society and becomes the new images.This thesis analyzes the female images through comparison of every section and it shows that womens female consciousness have been improved.Key words:Jane Eyre ;Scarlett OH

8、ara ; old images; new images; comparison 摘 要:简爱是英国女作家夏洛克勃朗特创作的一部关于爱情和女性尊严的小说,而飘则是美国著名女作家玛格丽特米歇尔创作的一部反映美国南北战争题材的小说。两部小说具有一定的相似性:简爱和飘都是反映爱情故事的小说;两位女主人公是同是独立的女性,与维多利亚时代的女性有着本质区别,她们不再依附于男性,有自己的思想,她们在实现自我价值的过程中都与社会和命运作抗争。但是,通过对比两部小说我们会发现两位女主人公的不同之处。简爱虽然具有反抗精神但在一些方面依旧保留着女性的“陈规形象”,而郝思嘉则完全摆脱了社会对女性的束缚,成为当时女性

9、的“新形象”。本论文通过对比来分析女性形象,根据这些对比可以看出女性意识和女性地位的不断提高。 关键词:简爱;郝思嘉;陈规形象;新形象;对比IntroductionThere are many scholars both in our country and aboard who have already done a lot of studies about Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind,but not so many studies about the comparison between female old image in Jane Eyre an

10、d new image in Gone with the Wind,this thesis will focus on their similarities and differences.Jane Eyre is the nineteenth century famous British female writer Charlotte Brontes masterpiece.It is generally accepted that Jane Eyre is Charlotte Brontes “poetic life portrayal, with autobiographical wor

11、ks.”When the author creating this novel, the UK was the worlds number one industrial power, but women are still subordinate status. Jane Eyre has two basic melodies in life: passion, fantasy, rebellion and perseverance, the desire for freedom and happiness and the pursuit of higher spiritual realms.

12、 The novel has successfully created a restless, shame, rebellious female images.Gone with the Wind is the USA female writer Margaret Mitchells only works. It is a panoramic social novel, which takes the American Civil War as the historical background and the social life of the South as the living en

13、vironment.The heroine Scarlett violent treachery, work hard with a pioneering spirit of self-improvement spirit, showing the her female autonomy pursuit. Before the war, she abandoned the traditional lady manners and reserved,desperate to pursue their love.During the war, in order to survive, she ab

14、andoned the aristocratic Miss squeamish to protect families. After the war, she breaking the shackles of women,pursuing the self -worth.This thesis will be consist of three parts.In the first chapter,it will make a comparison between Jane Eyre and Scarlett OHara on their family background and appear

15、ance,their attitudes towards to love and money.In the second chapter,it will analyses the similarities and the differences between the themes.In the third chapter,it will make a comparison between female “Old Images” in Jane Eyre and “New Images ” in Gone with the Wind.I hope through the comparisons

16、 could show that womens position and womens female consciousness have been improved.Chapter 1The Comparison between Jane Eyre and Scarlett OHaraFirstly,I will compare Scarlett OHara with Jane Eyre on three aspects.When we read the two novels,we can know that both of them not traditional women,becaus

17、e they deal with difficulties,they show their great courage and strong ability,Then the following paragraphs the thesis will analyze them and compare the similarity and differences from their background and appearance,their attitudes towards love and money.1.1 Jane Eyres and Scarlett OHaras family b

18、ackground and appearances1.1.1 Jane Eyres family background and appearancesJane Eyres parents died when she is very young,so she goes to her uncles home.Her uncle treats her well,but after her uncle died,Jane Eyres time at Gateshed Hall is a typical experience of misery.In her family,she is looked d

19、own by everyone and does a lot of housework.Jane Eyres cousins John Reed is the first oppressor Jane meets in her life.He beats and insults Jane at will.Mrs.Reed is a harsh and cold-hearted women in this novel,Jane say to her that I am glad you are no relation of mine.I will never call you aunt agai

20、n so long as I live.After Jane fights back,she is locked in the red room lonely.After that Mrs.Reed decided to send Jane to a charity schoolLowood Institution.Lowood Institution is just like a prison,the school restricts the development of the students.At Lowood all the girls are systematically star

21、ved and deprived of all sensory satisfaction.Mrs.Brochelehurt,he is the he second oppressor in Janes life,he is the treasurer and manager of the Institution.He is a loveless and hypocritical man.He does not let them have enough rest and forces them to cut their naturally curly hair and wears the wor

22、st quality and the ugliest clothes.He wants to kill these poor girls nature of pursuing beauty.Janes appearance is quite normal,and she is a small and plain orphan girl brought up by her harsh and cold-hearted aunt.Instead of being pretty,rich,frill,and modest,Jane has nothing attractive at the firs

Scarlett OHaras family background and appearancesScarlett OHara lives in an affluence family in the southern part of American.Her father is Gerald,he does not receive a lot of education so his knowledge is so lack that “the only Latin he knew was the responses of the Mass and the only

24、 history the manifold wrongs of Ireland that had come down through the years.”(Margaret.1993:17)Ellen OHara is Scarletts mother,she is different from her rough and not well-educated husband,she is an elegant,noble and beautiful women.We can know her tender characters from the way she speaks,”the sof

25、t slurring voice”,but “it was a voice that never raised in command to a servant or reproof to a child but a voice that was obeyed instantly at Tara”.She is a gentle women but she is also a serious women,she is a strict with her daughter because she hopes that her daughter will be a perfect women lik

26、e her.Expect her parents,Scarletts has two younger sisters,but they do not get along well with each other.Suellen is a hypocritical girl who is Scarletts first younger sister.She wants to draw peoples attention and her action makes Scarlett sneer her.Carrent,her second younger sister,is shy and does

27、 not has her own idea.All in all,Scarlett grows up with her rude and noisy male friends not with her elegant and noble female friends.The appearance of Scarlett is not superior,but her sharp and good figure make her very sexy.In the first chapter of Gone with the Wind,the writer gives us a detailed

28、description:It was an arresting face,pointed of chin,sguare of jaw her eyes were pale without a touch of hazel,starred with bristly black brows slanted upward,cutting a starting oblique line in her magnolia-white skin.(刘翠湘、汪珍 2008:21)1.2 Jane Eyres and Scarlett OHaras attitudes toward love1.2.1 Jane

29、 Eyres attitude toward loveJane Eyre as the heroine of love novels is the female image of the unprecedented female image in this nineteenth Century literary works. The heroine of the past love story is beautiful, elegant image, and Jane Eyre, poor, humble, not beautiful, little, but she has a heart

30、of wisdom, strong, brave heart, the more valuable is she doesnt because of his poor and appearance and low self-esteem. On the contrary, her brave firm:I and your soul are equal. I have the same soul as you, and it has a heart as well.! I am not by the customs, practices, even is not with flesh and

31、blood with your speech - this is my mind talking with your mind as if we have left the world, two people stand together in front of the God, equal to each other, as we have always been as!Jane Eyre dare to love a social class is far higher than their men, more daring to take the initiative to expres

32、s their love to each other. Jane Eyre despise wealth, social status and religious dignity, she thought, true happiness lies in the beautiful world of spirit and noble and pure heart. Jane Eyre is a rational understanding of women on their own ideas and personality, a is no longer blindly follow in m

33、en and worldly requirement female, a of their own values and emotions to make independent judgments of women, a strong, independent women. 1.2.2. Scarlett OHaras attitude toward love Scarlett, the outstanding person who was born in the American turbulence, her excellent personality emitted boundless

34、 light. She is brave and strong, optimistic, never yielding.And the most prominent is her dedication to love.However, out of frustration, she married two men who she dont like. When she once again to see her favorite Ashley, still like a girl as madly in love with him, desperate to talk to him love.

35、In her view of love, love and marriage can be separated.She doesnt care about others marriage, put all her energy into love Ashley and fight for their own happiness.She did not care about etiquette and moral chains, her love is always free and unrestrained.Did you ever think that I love you to a man

36、 who loves a womans pole? Did you ever think that I had loved you for years before I got you? During the war, I wanted to fly far and high times, forget you, but I always forget, every time you want to come back again. After the war, I risked being caught to get back, but also to find you. Its cruel of you to those who love you, Scarlett.” What is gratifying is when she lost her daughter,her husband Rhett has also been away from her, s

38、he realized that her real lover is Rhett.She feels very repentant, but she also believe she can let he fall in love with her . 1.3 Jane Eyres and Scarlett OHaras attitudes toward money1. 3.1Jane Eyres attitude toward moneyJane is very poor when she is a child,so she does not desire to have a lot of

39、money when Jane and Rochester prepare things for marriage. Rochester says:“I will myself put the diamond chain around your neck,and the circlet on your foreheadand I will clasp the bracelets on these fine wrists,and load these fairy-like fingers with rings.”When Jane hear this,she thinks that Roches

40、ter uses jewelry to limit Jane mind.Jane feels that she is oppressed,and that Rochesters smile has”such a sultan,bestow on a slave his gold and gems had enriched.”and she is without freedom.From this we can know Jane does not care about money.1.3.2.Scarlett OHaras attitude toward moneyRhett always l

41、ooks down on Scarletts passion for money.We can know from these sentence:“Good Lord!”he ( Rhett ) cried impatiently.“Dont you ever think of anything but money?”“Ever since Ive know you,youre wanted two things:Ashley and to be rich enough to tell the world to go to hell.”(Margaret,1993:198)After the

42、civil war,every southerners should face the problem that is how to survive under a totally changed situation.It is a very hard problem.Scarlett also has to face it.She should look after family.Scarlett realizes that the money is the only thing can prevent people from starvation and being defeated by

43、 the insecure and unstable age.If she has a lot of money,she will not be afraid of anything in the world.So she tries her best to earn money.She decides to gain lots of money which could insure her against the needy and tough life.Sine the Scarlett begins to do all she can seize land and obtain mone

44、y and her belief is that the more she gets,the safer she is. Chapter 2 The Similarity and the Differences between the ThemesAfter comparing the characters of Scarlett and Jane Eyre,I will compare the similarity and differences of the theme between these two novels,As for the similarity,the theme of

45、both of these two novels is marriage and love,however,though they are talk about the same thing,there are also some differences of them between these two novels.2.1The similarity of the themeJane Eyre and Gone with the Wind both are from the female perspective of the British and American two womens

46、story. They are based on the specific social environment of the two women, in order to realize the self value as the main line, the female value of their unique charm, and the awakening of female consciousness.In the vicious environment, Jane Eyre still shows a strong resistance to consciousness.Whe

47、n Rochester felt more than her senior right to issue her order, she said to her master:I think, sir, you older than I, or see the world alone than me much, you are no right to command me; if you have the right to claim superior, that depends on how you use your time and experience.With the employmen

48、t relationship, did you agree to make me tough?Im sure, Mr. I would never have informal wrong that rude and unreasonable; the former I quite like. The latter, indeed any free people are not willing to tolerate, even if is to take the salary, also do not want to endure.When Jane and Rochester in the

52、ning of the female self consciousness and independent right of request.2.2 The differences of the theme2.2.1The theme of Jane Eyre Jane Eyre is a woman who is unwilling to endure social oppression and the courage to pursue ones happiness. Whether her poor social status, or her wandering life experie

53、nces, are the real portrayal of the British lower peoples life. The author portrays a from the awakening of the lower strata of society in the new women, and for her to resist oppression and social prejudice, to strive for independence of personality and dignity, for the pursuit of a happy life tena

54、cious struggle praised them. Eyre Jane, a dignified and the pursuit of equality, this seemingly fragile and inner toughness of the woman because this work and become countless womens hearts model. Novels show the hero and heroine of the ups and downs of love experience, sing the praises of get rid o

55、f all the old customs and prejudice, love built on mutual understanding and mutual respect based on, a strong spiritual shock power of art. It is the most successful lies in shaping the courage to resist, the courage to fight for the image of the freedom and peace and other status of women.The theme

56、 of Gone with the Wind Gone with the Wind comprehensively shows the southern American social style, the variety of characters in the huge social changes in the fate of the change. By showing the change of different characters in the social environment, it reveals the different destiny of different c

57、haracter inevitably. The most attractive place for the novel is Scarletts personality and her love story. Her love is not poetic and romantic, but real and utilitarian. In order to achieve the purpose, she does not hesitate to use cunning trick. Her romantic love pursuit,and her selfish pursuit of pleasure in the life, this combination of character show a detestable and endearing characters. At the same time, the awakening of the heroines self-awareness, the enhancement and the pursuit of autonomy are also demonstrated.Chapter 3 The Co
