5、tissufficientlyhotandmuggy,despitetheislandchainsnortherlylatitude,toallowwidespreadricecultivation.Summerheatisfollowedbythehighlyunpredictableautumnrainsthataccompanytheviolenttropicalwindstormsknownastyphoons.ThesecyclonicstormsoriginateoverthewesternPacificandtravelingreatclockwisearcs,initially

6、headingwesttowardthePhilippinesandsouthernChina,curvingnorthwardlaterintheseason.ColdweatherdrivesthesestormseastwardacrossJapanthroughearlyautumn,revitalizingtheSiberianairmassandusheringinnewannualweathercycle.ThisyearlycyclehasplayedkeyroleinshapingJapanesecivilization.Ithasassuredtheislandsample
