、力原文In this first part of our lecture today we shall consider some basic facts about the workingsof the brain. It may surprise you to know that the human brain is only about three pounds in weight. Men"s brains tend to be slightly bigger than women"s. The brain is greyish white in colour an

、d is wrinkled rather like a shelled walnut. The surface area of the brain is thus much larger ifthe brain were smooth. Each working part of the brain is a nerve cell known as a neurone and there are at least a million million neurons in your brain. The neurones are, of course, tiny. The neurones bot

、h conduct electrical impulses and generate the power to send messages through the nervous system. The electrical impulses cause chemical reactions in cells to take place and these chemical reactions could be said to be responsible for the passing of messages. It has been estimated that from 100,000

、to 1,000,000 different chemical reactions of this type take placein your body every minute. In this second part of our lecture, let us The brain can be divided into three main partsnow look in more detail at the structure of the brain. the hindbrain, the midbrain and the forebrain. And each of these p

The brain stem connects the brain with the spinal cord along which all messages to and from the brain must pass. The brain stem also controls the main automatic f

、unctions of the brain, such as heartbeat, breathing and consciousness. The cerebellum controls balance and coordination. The midbrain is the small part of the brain which joins the hindbrain to the forebrain or cerebrum. The cerebrum is the largest and most developed part of the brain. It consists of

、 two hemispheres. In general the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body and the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body. Deep grooves divide each hemisphere into four lobes. The side or temporal lobes control hearing and smell, the top or parietal lobes control touch. Precis

、e areas of the parietal lobes connect to different parts of the body one area relates to the tip of your leftthumb, for instance, another to your right earlobe. The size of the area of the brain dedicated to any part of the body depends on the sensitivity of that part of the body the lips and thehan

、ds, for instance, have particularly large areas of the brain. The upper arm, on the other hand, has a much smaller area. Your lips and your hands are far more sensitive to touch than your upper arm is. Areas of the parietal lobes also deal with the analysis of visual images, with language and with m

、athematical calculations. The rear lobes process vision and the frontal lobes are concerned with thought and emotion and also control motor functions. In this third part of the lecture we shall look at some further left-right brain distinctions. It would seem that the left brain has a greater respons

、ibility for such things as words, logic, numbers, sequence, linearity and analysis. The right brain, on the other hand, deals more with rhythm, spatial awareness, imagination, daydreaming, colour and Gestalt. Traditional education has tended to concentrate on left-brain activities whereas right-brai

、n activities are more associated with the arts and with leisure activities. People have sometimes been characterized as either left-or right-brain dominant with famous scientists like Einstein being called left-brain dominant and noted artists like Picasso being termed right-brain dominant. However,

、 psychologists like Tony Buzan argue that people who are particularly gifted actually use both sides of their brain. Einstein was a keen violinist and attributed the success of his scientific work to his habit of daydreaming and playing imagination games. Similarly, the work of the greatest artists

Buzan argues that we need to stimulate both sides of our brain in order to achieve our full potential.解析: greyish 解析: wrinkled 解析: nerve 解析: impulses 解析: generate 解析: messages 解析: three 解析: cord 解析: autom

、then, I'll just tell you a bit about what you're going to be doing. Now you'll see round the hall there are all these bits of equipment and things. Like over there there are some weights and over there are some other kinds of weights. There you've got a step at the back there. There&

、#39;s a weighted ball and in the corner there is just a pole. There are 15 different activities in all. Some make use of equipment and others don't, and you'll see a notice telling you what is OK to each one. The idea is that yougo round each of the activities and do themone at a time. Ten o

、Has anybody got any questions? OK, right now, all of these exercises are designed to develop different muscles in your body to sort of well improve your muscle tone and of course your breathing. When you do the exercises in the middle, you may find yourselves puffing and panting a lot. You'll be

、 doing stuff like skipping and running onthe spot, star jumps, lunges that"s meant to help your breathing and your heart rate. Well, you probably won"t know what half these exercises are. You"ve got bicep curls for example, press-ups, sit-ups, stomach twists, back extensions. Anyone g

、ot any idea about what they are? Oh well, don"t worry. I"ll give you a demonstration of each before we get going. And I"ll be coming round to see if you"re on the right tracks. Now before you start, I"ll just have to give you a bit of warning. Maybe it"s a bit off puttin

、gbut it"s meant at least to be for your own good. Wejust have to check that you really think you"re fit enough to do all this. Of course, exercise is good for you but, if you do the wrong kind, or at the wrong rate, or at the wrong moment, it can actually damage you. It ends up doing you more harm than good. So I"m just going to read a list of things out to you. If any of them is true for you, then you really shouldn"t be doing any of this without seeing your doctor or having a word with me, right? So what you"ve got to watch for is if you&
