Gree n, a n ative of Min eral Ridge, Ohio, who graduated from Wright State in June.The son and grandson of factory workers, he was exactly the type of stude nt that Wright State had bee n established to serve - and the type that it is hav ing more and more trouble serv ing.Mr. Gree n says he
30、could not have stayed in his hometow n and found work because too many of the local factories have closed and "there are no jobs."He saw earning a degree in man ageme nt-i nformatio n systems as the key to making a dece nt liv ing, and he had come to Wright State because it was more afford
31、able tha n the other colleges that he con sidered.The problem for many Wright State students is that "affordable" is beco ming a relative term in public higher educati on. As is gen erally the case in periods of econo mic stag natio n, eve n the least-expe nsive public colleges have bee n
32、hitt ing their stude nts with one hefty tuiti on in crease after ano ther.Wright State still charges less than 9 of Ohio's 13 public universities, and its rece nt tuiti on in creases are in line with those adopted by other public four-year colleges around the nation. But after several consecutiv
33、e years of double-digit or n ear-double-digit tuiti on in creases, it costs n early 50 perce nt more for in-state un dergraduates to en roll here tha n it did four years ago. Most will pay over $6,000 in tuition for the 2004-5 academic year, which gets under way this week.The easiest choices for pol
34、icy makers in an econo mic dow nturn are ofte n the ones that cause tuiti on to rise. Lawmakers would much rather reduce state spe nding tha n raise taxes to close budget gaps caused by a sour economy. And because public colleges have an alter native source of reve nue - tuiti on -it is easier for l
35、awmakers tocut spe nding on higher educati on tha n on mostother public services. Mean while, many public colleges seem con vin ced that it is much better to raise tuition than to eliminate academic programs, trim salaries, or lay off employees.It takes visiting a fairly typical public college like
36、Wright State to see that rel ying on such tuiti on in creases to finance such in stituti ons has real costs, extending well beyond the dollar figures that show up on students' tuition bills.In an in terview here last spri ng, Mr. Gree n said he expected to graduate with $25,000 in college-related debt.
