Martin Eden published in September1909, is the most outstanding novel of Jack London, a masterpiece reflecting deep

8、social thought of the 20th Century. In the preface to Martin Eden, Professor Su Xingsha made a statement that in the development of American literary history, Martin Eden serves as a forerunner in depicting the disillusionment of American dream, followed by Dreisers American Tragedy and Fitzgeralds

9、The Great Gatsby (Rebuild American Dream: 1983).This view can also find support in Earle Labor, a famous expert on Jack London. In Jack London, Earle Labor quoted a readers impression on Martin Eden: “during last two nights, I was totally engrossed in Martin Eden, and it deeply touched me. No other

10、books have ever exerted such an influence on me. Up to now I still cannot understand why I was so attracted by it.” (Earle Labor: Twayne Publishing Company 1974. 357).Such was also the case with Earle. He immediately set about to find out the reason and then declared that it consisted in the fact th

11、at Martin Eden reflected the aspiration of Americans. Although Martin Eden, especially its tragic end, has won wide controversy ever since its publication, its position in the American literature can never not be denied. Many studies have been done on analysis of reasons of Martin Edens death. Some

12、researchers believe that Martins death is mainly because of his individuality. Some researchers analyze it from Maslow peoples hierarchical needs theory psychologically. Some believe that Martins death is because of his personality. Some believe that his collapse of his dream causes his death. Since

13、 my thesis isare based on the studies about the crumbing of Martins dream leading to his death, I will introduce this topic in detail. They are mainly focused on these following two three aspects:The first aspect is focused on that the1. collapse Disillusionment of his dream of love played a great p

14、art in Martin Edens death. Martin Edens dream is to bridge the gap between Ruth,win her heart and step into the well-bred circles by being a famous writer (Peng Lingfang, 2010). Some scholars believe that, Martin Edens love toward for Ruth who was an upper class beautiful girl with good education is

15、 the direct motive for him to struggle for a new and bright life .(Wu Lao, 2011). However, Martin was under the bottom of the society being s sailor who was barely educated. At the beginning, he wanted to get close to her,Ruth, the goddess in his heart. , Knowing there was an insurmountable gap betw

16、een them, so he struggled to get rid of his own class, the working class, and to become one member of the capitalist society. Hhe spared no effort to improve himself in the hope of being accepted by the upper class since he had met such an unimaginable woman in the real world. is dream of romantic l

17、ove towards Ruth formed. He spared no effort to realize his dream, such as he learned the standard English by himself in order to be admitted by the upper-class, the capitalist society; He decided to choose writing as a stepping-stone to the upper class, and he gaive up the opportunity of making mon

18、ey by being a sailor. During his writing process, he suffered great hardship and went through a bitter ordeal, out of pocket, unbearable thirst and hunger. In his hardest times, to win Ruths heart is was Martin Edens anchor. However, no one could truly understand his works. His sisters and sister in

19、-law called him an idler (Song Xiaoxing). As he opened the book, he began to understand that those people boasting to know and appreciate the paintings actually know nothing about the true literature, paintings and music. Even Ruth criticized his works again and againrepeatedly. Finally, when he a s

20、ocialism defender,is writings were was criticized by newspapers, Ruth broken off the engagement with Marin at her parents request, which caused Martin in great desperation. However, there came a turning point, his works were published one after another. AndMoreover, Martin, the famous author, had mo

21、re and more money. At this periodBased on this fact, Ruth unexpectedly wanted to get close dedicated herself to Martin him. Until this moment, his dream of romantic love with Ruth had gone with the wind (Yu Lixia,:2004). And his dream of pure love had been devastated (Peng Lingfang, 2010). He did no

22、t realize that what he loved was is a goddess of love, a goddess in his love poem, that he had never loved Ruth, a capitalist, having the representative capitalist features: narrow-minded, vacuous until this moment. What Ruth loved was is his fame and money; all of which has brought about his comple

23、te disillusionment of love (Ji Yapin, 2010). The second aspect i2. s about Disillusionment of his career dream.The direct and fundamental reason was that the hypocrisy of the publishing house made him desperate at writing books for the publishing house. When Martin Eden was obscure, none of the publ

24、ishers had any interest of his books. All of a sudden, everything changed. Magazines and publishing house longed for his works, even the works that had ever turned down by them. Magazines and publishing house urged Martin Eden for more of his works. As a result, Martin Eden did not have enough time

25、to create good works, while these works were still published by these magazines and publishing house, which brought readers protests. Martin Eden gradually understood that the publishing houses former cold attitude and sharp contrasting welcoming attitude brought the self-interests into full play. A

26、ndIn addition, he was very hurt by the America literature that time. Because he had been aware of that no matter how hard he tried, no one could really understand his mind and the art in his literature works. After Martin Eden had been desperate at American literature, he did not want to become a wr

27、iter anymore. WhatsWhat is worse, he could not simply become a sailor as he used to be. There was is a contradict thing, which is that, Martin Eden, after becoming a decent, language appropriate and civilized man, he could not bear to be a coarse sailor, nor could he become a writer like this, livin

28、g in a net weaved by lies and hypocrisy. In the aspect of career, his dream had been disillusioned (Peng Lingfang, 2010).3. Disillusionment of capitalist values. Martin made the decision to be a member of “exalted beings”. At the beginning, he takes it for granted that after his great effort, he can

29、 be a civilized man as Ruths family and earn enough money to win her hand in marriage. He had been always holding his dream in his mind, which is, to win Ruths heart and to become one member of the upper class. However, when he sought to become one of the upper class and get rid of his own working-c

30、lass, he found the capitalist society is nothing but emptiness and mendacity. He abhorred the upper-class and all the hypocrisy around him(Zhou Liping, 2000).From what have been analyzed above, we know that Martin Eden is the outstanding novel of Jack London and many scholars have done great number

31、of researches on Martin Edeitn, in particular, itsits tragic end. Although some of them have done researches of the tragedy of Martin Eden, my way of analyzing the tragic fate of Martin Eden is different and penetrating. Unlike other researches, my thesisthis paper is focused on the causes of Martin

32、s death from the perspective of the collapse of his dream. The reason why I choose to this topic is that ImI am interested with this impressive novel. Another is that I myself is a dream-driven person and I know deeply in my heart what will become if all of the dreams collapse. Martin Eden and its a

33、uthor Jack London and the result of Martin Eden always seem to linger in my mind and I want to do some study on it. So I would like to make a further study on this topic to provide a new and fresh way of analyzing the causes of Martin Edens tragic fate. As for this paper , it is composed offalls int

34、o five parts. The first part is the introduction of the novel Martin Eden and its author Jack London. The second part comes to analyzes Martin Edens dream of love broken. The third part is about his dream of writing crumbled. The fourth part is focusesd on his dream of the capital society collapsed.

35、 Finally, the paper goes to the conclusion that disillusioned , from which we will know what dreams had played a fatal part in Martins tragedy andto Martin or we will know dream to everyone in the modern day is what water to fish.2. 选题依据、主要研究内容、研究思路及方案。Martin Eden is the semi-biographic novel of Jac

36、k London, to which had been devoted with the writers personal experience and his full feelings. It is like a sparkle of fire and finally brought about an uproar. This is a masterpiece that withstands the test of time just as its main character Martin Eden, who has arouse readers enduring discussion

37、and resonance Because of its significance and great value of this novel, I decided to make a further analysis on it.This paper aims to make a further study on Martin Edens tragic fate, but from a different angle i. e the collapse of Martins dreams brought about his inevitable death. I will discuss t

38、his paper from these five aspects: the introduction, Martin Edens dream of love broken, his dream of writing crumbles, his dream of the society broken, and the conclusion.The research is going to solve problems as follows:(1) Carefully choose the reference books and periodicals, read diligently the

39、books and periodicals chosen for a solid foundation for the research.(2) To study the materials carefully, and to get more information as much as possible.(3) To know about what Martins dreams were and what these dreams meant to him.(4) To Analyze the reasons for Martin Edens suicide from the perspe
