Their results were recently published in the United States in the Journal of Gerontology.People who are confident of their ability to control their lives have aninternal locus of control,

5、 and have a better chance of being well adjusted in their old age, said Pedersen. An external locus of control, believing that outside forces determine the course of life, has been linked to depression in latter years, she said.We are trying to understand what makes people different. What makes some

6、 people age gracefully and others have a more difficult time ?she said. The study showed that while people have an inborn predilection toward independence and self-confidence, about 70 percent of this personality trait3 is affected by a persons environment and lifetime experiences.Pedersens studies,

7、 with various collaborators, probe the aging process by comparing sets of twins, both identical and fraternal, many of whom were separated at an early age.The subjects were drawn from a roster first compiled about 30 years ago registering all twins born in Sweden since 1886. The complete list, which

They spend a lifetime fighting a losing battle against spreading hips, protruding tummies and double chins. Some wage

12、all-out war on FAT. Mere dieting is not enough. They exhaust themselves doing exercises, sweating in sauna baths, being pummeled and massaged by weird machines. The really wealthy diet-mongers pay vast sums for health cures. For two weeks they can enter a nature clinic and be starved to death for a

13、hundred guineas a week. Dont think its only the middle-aged who go in for these fads either. Many of these bright young things you see are suffering from chronic malnutrition: they are living on nothing but air, water and the goodwill of God.Dieters undertake to starve themselves of their own free w

14、ill; so why are they so miserable? Well, for one thing, theyre always hungry. You cant be hungry and happy at the same time. All the horrible concoctions they eat instead of food leave them permanently dissatisfied. Wonderfood is a complete food, the advertisement says. Just dissolve a teaspoonful i

15、n water. A complete food it may be, but not quite as complete as a juicy steak. And, of course, theyre always miserable because they feel so guilty. Hunger just proves too much for them and in the end they lash out and devour five huge guilt-inducing cream cakes at a sitting. And who can blame them?

What utter torture it is always watching others tucking into piles of mouth-watering food while you munch a water biscuit and sip unsweetened lemon juice!Whats all this self-inflicted torture for? 21、fairs, Dr. Samuel Johnson, once remarked, Men have been wise in very different modes; but they have always laughed in the same way.A sense of humor may take various forms and laughter may be anything from a refined tingle to an earth quaking roar, but the effect is always the same. Humor helps us to

22、 maintain a correct sense of values. It is the one quality which political fanatics appear to lack. If we can see the funny side, we never make the mistake of taking ourselves too seriously. We are always reminded that tragedy is not really far removed from comedy, so we never get a lopsided view of

23、 things.This is one of the chief functions of satire and irony. Human pain and suffering are so grim; we hover so often on the brink of war; political realities are usually enough to plunge us into total despair. In such circumstances, cartoons and satirical accounts of somber political events redress the balance. They take the wind out of pompous and arrogant politicians who have lost their sense of proportion. They enable
