The maker p hilos ophy echoes old ideas advocated byJoh n Dewey, Mon tessori, and eve n ancient Gre
20、ek p hilos op hers, as we poin ted out recen tly.E These maker sp aces are ofte n outside of classrooms, and are serv ing an imp orta nt educati onal fun cti on. The Maker Moveme nt is rediscoveri ng earning by doing, which is Deweys p hrase from 100 years ago. We are rediscoveri ng Dewey and Mon te
21、ssori and a lot of the p ractices that they pion eered that have bee n forgotte n or at least put aside. A maker sp ace is a place which can be in a school, but it does nt look like a classroom. It can be in a library. It can be out in the com muni ty. It has tools and materials. Its a place where y
22、ou get to make thi ngs based on your in terest and on what youre earning to do.F Ideas about lear ning by doing have struggled to become mai nstream educati on ally, des pite being old concepts from Dewey and Mon tessori, Plato and Aristotle, and in the America n Con tcxt, Ralph Emers on, on the val
23、ue of exp erie nee and self-relia nee. Its not n ecessarily an efficie nt way to learn. We earn, in a sen se, by trial and error. Lear ning from exp erie nee is somethi ng that takes time and p atie nee. Its very in dividualized. If your goal is to have sta ndardized app roaches to lear ning, where
24、everybody lear ns the same thi ng at the same time in the same way, the n lear ning by doing does nt really fit that mold anymo re. Its not the world of textbooks. Its not the world of testi ng.田G Lear ning by doing may not be efficie nt, but it is effective. Projectbased lear ning has grow n in pop
25、u larity with teachers and adm ini strators.However, p roject-based lear ning is not maki ng. Although there is a connection.there is also a dist inction. The differe nee lies in whether the p roject is in a sense defi ned and devel oped by the stude nt or whether its assig ned by a teacher. Well al
26、l get the kids to build a small boat. We are all going to lear n about X, Y, and Z. That tends to be one form of p roject-based lear ning.H I really believe the core idea of mak ing is to have an idea withi n yourand begi n to devel op it ,head or you just borrow it from some one rep eat it and imp
27、rove it. Then, realize that idea somehow. That thi ng that you make is valuable to you and you can share it with others. Im in terested in how these thi ngs are exp ressi ons of that person, their ideas, and their in teract ions使变得无足轻with the world.I In some ways, a lot of forms of maki ng in school
28、 trivialize( 重)mak ing. The thi ng that you make has no value to you. Once you are done dem on strati ng whatever concept was in the textbook, you throw away the pipe clea ners, the cardboard tubes.J Mak ing should be stude nt-directed and stude nt-led, otherwise its bori ng. It does nt have the mot
29、ivati on of the stude nt. Im not say ing thatstudents should not lear n concepts or not lear n skills. They do. But to really harn ess their motivati on is to build upon their in terest. Its to let them be in con trol and to drive the car.K Teachers should aim to build a supp ortive, creative en vir
30、 onment for students to do this work. A very social en vir onment, where they are lear ning from each other. Whe n they have a p roblem, it isnt the teacher n ecessarily coming in to solve it. They are respon sible for worki ng through that p roblem.t might be they have to talk to other stude nts in
31、 the class to help get an an swer.L The teachers role is more of a coach or observer. Sometimes, to peopi e, it sounds like this is a dimini shed rote for teachers. I thi nk its a heighte ned role. Youre ereati ng this en vir onmen t, like a maker sp ace. You have 20 kids doing differe nt thi ngs. Y
32、ou are watchi ng them and really its the受挫)? Do they n eed somethi nghuma n behaviors youre look ing at. Are they en gaged? A they devel oping and rep eati ng their p roject? Are they stumbli ng ( that they dont have? Can you help them be aware of where they are?M My belief is that the goal of mak i
33、ng is not to get every kid to be han ds-on, but it en able us to be good lear ners. Its not the kno wledge that is valuable, Its the p ractice of lear ning new thi ngs and un dersta nding howthigs work. These are p rocesses that you are devel oping so that you are able, over time, to tackle more in
34、teresti ng p roblems, more challe nging p roblems problems that require many people in stead of one person, and many skills in stead of one.N If teachers kee p it form-free and stude nt-led, it can still be tied to a curriculum and an educati onal plan. I thi nk a maker space is more like a like a i

What seems to be miss ing in school is how these subjects in tegrate, how t hey fit together in any meaningful way.
