They cannot measurethe essentials of effective written communica

42、tion: accuracy, reasoning,adequacy of evidence, good sense, ethical (伦理)position, convincingargument, meaningful organization, and clarity, among others.”H But EdX experts its software to be widely by schools anduniversities. It offers free online classes from Harvard, MIT and theUniversity of Calif

43、ornia-Berkeley; this fall, it will add classes from Wellesley,Geogetown and the University of Texas. In all, 12 universities participate inEdX, which offers certificates for course completion and has said that itplans to continue to expand next year, including adding internationalschools.I The EdX a

44、ssessment tool requires human teachers, or graders 100essay or essay questions. The system then uses a variety ofmachine-learning techniques to train itself to be able to grade any numberof essays or answers automatically and almost instantly. The software willassign a grade depending on the scoring

A winner of one ofthe Hewlett contents, Vik Paruchurt was hired by EdX to help design itsassessment software.N “One of our focus is to help kids learn how to think critically,” saidrobablyVuchic, a program officer at the Hewlett Foundation. “
