When it comes to money, women too easily become cowed and timorous, eagerly accepting a crumb when actually what we want, and often deserve, is the whole loaf. Not enough of us, Im sorry to say, are

16、 prepared to adopt the Ann Robinson “I know what Im worth” philosophy.Deep in our psyche is a belief that somehow its crucial to stay silent and not push our luck. Were cursed with the “grateful” gene. I used to believe this was a generational thing, but the facts tell us otherwise. Middle-aged wome

17、n still earn 22 percent less than men, mainly because theyve been encouraged into low-paid careers. Caring, cashier, clerical, cleaning and catering are all, apparently, considered girly jobs. Thats not to denigrate or criticize them. Women with families may prefer the part-time opportunities they o

18、ffer.Whats criminal is that too many are wasting God-given talent cleaning floors or stacking shelves because, for the mother returning to the workplace, theres little else going. Shamefully, it appears any talk of gender segregation being a thing of the past was just that-talk. When was the last ti

19、me a woman turn up to sort out your drains or fix the central heating? I may have led to a sheltered existence, but the day has yet to come when my car is serviced by a woman.The root of the problem, were told, lies in the terrible standard of career advice offered the teenagers.The commission found

20、 a group of schoolgirls being given work experience in childcare, despite showing no interest in the subject. It does make you wonder if flower-arranging and 20 ways to boil an egg are still on the agenda.As someone whose career guidance could be summed up in these words teacher training college I f

21、ind this depressing news. Though the Prime Ministers idea of doubling the number of “coaches” offering advice about job and training opportunities in schools, it shouldnt fill us with too much hope.Saint Tony of Westminster has a knack of making every next big idea sound like a miracle cure.The fund

22、amental problem, which the report fails to address, is this. There are more 16-year-olds dropping out of school than ever before. Only Mexico, Turkey, Portugal, New Zealand and Greece have a worse record.Busloads of “coaches” could be drafted in, but it doesnt alter the fact that many teenage girls

23、and boys cannot write a job application, let alone plan a career. Some have had uninspiring teachers. Many have skived with impunity. State schools are turning out too many pupils simply not equipped to work. Others have no desire to.In a perfect world every girl should leave school inspired, confid

24、ent, enthusiastic and prepared to accept that hard work will earn her respect and freedom. Its not “coaches” armed with pamphlets and guidelines this generation of girls needs. EU Fund to Ease Globalization PainReview passage 3Western attitudes towards the societies of East Asia are a sad reflection of an inability to appreciate the economic achievements of Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and, more recently, parts of mainland China. No impa

44、rtial observer can deny that Asian models of economic and political development are proving successful. Impressive rates of economic growth have been achieved in at least some East Asian societies, such as Japan and Singapore. The resulting standard of healthcare and education which are offered to t

45、he citizens of these countries is superior to that of many Western countries. In addition, communal harmony and social stability are frequently combined with these East Asian economic success stories. It is not uncommon for East Asian societies to enjoy enviably high levels of employment and low rat

46、es of crime. The East Asian picture is impressive and totally justifies the invocation - in Singapore, and Malaysia and, increasingly in China and Japan - of an Asian model of economic and political development. The potent combination of dynamic market institutions and the benefits of flourishing co

47、mmunities, which has already become a reality in parts of East Asia, is one which has eluded Western societies.Asian models of political and economic development draw on indigenous cultural traditions such as Confucianism. They candidly repudiate Western ideals of individualism, human rights and dem

48、ocracy. Adherence to such models is already delivering prosperity and social stability to the peoples of East Asia so it would seem logical for the West to demonstrate a sympathetic interest.No such interest is apparent. It remains generally true that Western opinion and policy are based on the prem

49、ise that Western ideals and practices have universal authority. In other words, there is a widespread belief that success for Asian societies is dependent on their adoption of Western values and institutions.For many people in the West, modernization implies westernization. They would appear to over

50、look the fact that their own societies frequently demonstrate features which are far from desirable. Crimes against property in Britain are astonishingly common - with a worse record than even the United States. The foregrounding of human rights in the United States does not alter the disturbing fac

51、t that Americas violent crime and homicide record is higher than in all other Western societies. The murder rate in Moscow, in 1993 was only one third of that in New York.The US government has experimented with incarceration on a scale which exceeds that of any other democratic country but it remain

52、s unable to protect the ordinary liberty of its citizens. Over one and a quarter million US citizens are currently experiencing some form of imprisonment but the threat of this type of punishment is clearly no real deterrent to crime. American criticism of human rights infringements in Japan and Sin

53、gapore would seem unjustified when measured against how successful these countries are in protecting ordinary people from crime.Evidence that Western models are not entirely satisfactory even in the West does not weaken the cultural imperialism that prevails. The Western belief in the superiority of

54、 western models for all is unshaken. The time has surely come for Western leaders to consider what might be learned from Asian examples and to reflect on the fact that Asian models have never claimed the sort of universal authority which Western models, especially the American variety, claim for the

55、mselves. Indeed, Asian societies would seem to be infinitely more tolerant of differences than the liberal nations of the West.Harmonious coexistence of different cultures has been an ideal among the nations of Europe for some time though there is a growing fear that American hegemony is now hasteni

56、ng a European cultural decline. It would seem that Europe is guilty of seeing one basic model as obligatory - and this attitude may be compounding our apparent Americanization. European policy should certainly be more tolerant of Asian models. And couldnt we Europeans even benefit from looking towar
