great library of Alexandria burned the story goes one book was saved But it was not a valuable book and a poor man got it The book wasn t very interesting but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed It was a thin strip of vellum 羊皮纸 on which was written the secret of the Touchstone The touchstone was a small pebble 鹅卵石 that could turn any common metal into pure gold The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it But the secret was this The real stone would feel warn while ordinary pebbles are cold So the man sold his house bought a tent camped on the seashore and began testing pebbles He knew that if he picked up normal pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold he might pick up the same pebbles hundreds of times So when he felt one that was cold he threw it into the sea He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone Yet he went on and on this way Pick up a pebble Cold throw it into sea Pick up another Throw it into the sea The days stretched into months and the months into years One day however about midafternoon he picked up a pebble and it was warm He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up So when the one he wanted came along he still threw it away So it is with opportunity 机会 Unless we are vigilant it s easy to fail to realize an opportunity when it is in hand and it s just as easy to throw it away 1 According to the passage the touchstone is a stone why they are set close together on the front of your face The reasons are simple and important Your eyes are like two small cameras A camera catches an image of an object and records it on film Similarly when you look at something each eye takes in what it sees and sends this image to the back of the eyeball Because your eyes are set close together they see the world from about the same height but from a little different angles While your right eye sees an object a little to the right your left eye sees the same object a bit to the left Working as a team the eyes send the images to your brain then your brain put them together and you see a single image in the center Seeing in stereo 立体 means seeing with two eyes working tighter which is called stereoscopic sight This allows you to see the world in 3D Seeing depth helps you to judge how far it is between you and the objects you see and then adjust to the changing angle so that you can see something clearly when you move closer or farther away If images are coming from a single eye however only height and width can be perceived So if you see with one eye you will get a 2D image as in a photograph Now consider why your two eyes are on the front of your face Think of other animals just like you They are all hunting animals like lions and tigers This provides a field of sight about 180 degree wide which is called binocular sight On the other hand animals that are hunted have eyes on the sides of the head which provides nearly 360 degree field of sight However they don t have stereoscopic sight It is difficult for them to judge how far a danger is With both stereoscopic and binocular sight humans and hunting animals share the ability to see from side to side and to judge how far it is from other objects If you think it would be great to have another kind of sight perhaps with hundreds of tiny eyes like many insects do think again Each tiny insect eye sees only a tiny part Besides what if you needed glasses Be glad for the eyesight that you have 1 In Paragraph 2 the writer wants to 第 4 页 共 10 页 A tell us how our two eyes works B show the importance of eyes C compare our eyes with cameras D suggest using two eyes properly 2 The underlined word perceived in Paragraph 3 means A set B taken C seen D made 3 Which of the following statement is TRUE A Your right and left eyes gain the same image when looking at the same object B 2D images can always show depth height and width C Animals that are hunted usually see the world through stereoscopic sight D Fish with eyes on the sides of their heads have nearly 360 degree field of sight 4 In the last paragraph the writer thinks that seeing in stereo A is similar to the way a camera works B is an ability humans are lucky to have C would be better for a wilder field of sight D helps people to have better sight than animals 5 What is probably the best title for this passage A Seeing in stereo B Protecting your eyes 第 5 页 共 10 页 C Treasuring your eyes D Seeing with eyes 3 6 分 阅读理解 My daughter Becky graduated from Washington High School in June During the graduation ceremony one of her classmates gave a simple speech that I will
