Knowledge goals: (1) Words and phrases: pressure, compete, opinion, skill, typical, football, cut out, continue, compare, comparewith, crazy, push, development, cause, usual (2) Target languages: Life shouldnt just be about Why dont they just let their kids be kids? Although its normal to want successful children, its even more important to have happy children. 2. Ability goals: Have students get the main idea of the passage without getting the meaning of the new words, and make full use of correlative knowledge to describe ones own problems and give others advice to solve the problem.3. Emotion goals: To learn about the common problems the students have in China and other countries. To know that studying is important for everyone.II. Teaching Difficulties: To practice in reading for specific details. To practice in suing contextual clues to guess the meanings of words.III. Teaching Procedures:Step 1. Lead in 1. Duty report. Ask students some questions about the duty report, have them take notes about the new words they learn today.2. Ask students what activities they usually do after school. Give students several minutes to discuss, then invite some of them to say out. Write the names of the activities on the blackboard.Step 2. Reading 1. Let students look at the title and guess what the passage is about.2. Let Ss read the passage quickly and answer the questions. (Give points if they are right.) What are the problems for Chinese children? Ss: They have to take so many after-school classes. Who gives their opinions about the problem?Ss: Cathy Taylor, Linda Miller and Dr. Alice Green.(Write the answers with some key words on the blackboard. Help students to understand the passage better.)2. Ss read the passage carefully, then answer the questions. (If they are right, give more points.) What kind of classes do they usually take? Ss: Many of them take classes of exam skills, others take classes of sports. Why do they take so many after-school classes? Ss: Because they want to get into a good high school and later a good university, or they want to compete and win. Does it only happen in China? Ss: No, it doesnt. T: That means, the problem is very common in both China and America, right? Ss: Yes. (Write common on the blackboard.) Does everyone enjoy watching talent shows? Why?3. Read the passage together again, ask students what the three peoples opinions are. Write down some key words on the blackboard next to the names. S1: Cathy Taylor thinks these activities are important for her childrens future. S2: Linda Miller thinks its crazy and unfair. S3: Dr. Alice Green thinks its not good, and children should have time to relax and think for themselves.4. Then encourage students to retell the passage according to the key words. (Give more points if they can say sentences fluently and with good pronunciation and intonation.)Step 3. DiscussionAfter retelling the passage, ask students what we can do to lower the pressure.Give them several minutes to discuss in a group. Encourage everyone to speak.Add names of activities on the blackboard while presenting.T: In a word, everyone has his or her own stress. No matter what or how much stress they have, they should learn to relax.Step 4. PracticeLet students look at the words in bold in the article and ask them to match them with the meanings in 2c.T: Although we they are new words, we can guess the meanings according to the sentences next to them. Can you make your own sentences with these new words now?Have a sentence making competition to help them master the key points.Give points if they are right, encourage them to make more sentences with the new words.Step 5.
