电影片名的翻译与文化策略.pdf

摘要 通过分析近年中国电影片名的翻译 指出其中存在的误 译与文化缺失现象 并提出电影片名的英译应遵循翻译的通用 规则 同时要注重文化因素 在译名中尽量表达出原名的文化 内涵 本文旨在探讨汉英翻译中文化缺失产生的原因 并提出 了相应的策略 关键词 华语电影 译名 文化缺失 应对策略 中图分类号 J992 文献标识码 A 文章编号 1003 3653 2010 01 0147 02 收稿时间 2009 11 11 作者简介 甄玉 1971 女 广东台山人 广西艺术学院人文 学院讲师 研究方向 英语语言文学及应用语言学 电影片名的翻译与文化策略 甄玉 广西艺术学院人文学院 广西南宁530022 一 前言 近年的华语电影 尤其是张艺谋 冯小刚 陈凯歌等著名导演 执导的大片 在海内外备受关注 这也引起了业界对电影片名翻译 的思考 故人云 名不正则言不顺 因此电影的片名对一部电影的 成功与否起着重要的作用 电影片名通常可以分为人名 地名 事件和常用语等几类 成 功的华语电影片名的翻译不仅 与优秀的文学作品名一样立片言 以居要 应能言简意赅地概括影片内容 提示其主题 激发观众的 联想与观看欲望 1 p92 而且使翻译做到 文化交流 而不是文 化蒙蔽 2 p213 二 电影片名的翻译方法 1 人名 地名 以人名 地名作为电影片名 这一类英文电影片名的汉语翻译 主要采用以下六种方法 音译 transliteration 近年华语电影中以人名为片名的 4 部电影 只有 叶问 采用 了音译 而且是粤语发音的音译 译为IP Man IP 就是 叶 yip 字的粤语发音 Man 即 问 字的粤语发音 对熟悉粤语的朋友来 说 IP Man 就比较容易理解 但是绝大部分观众肯定是一头雾 水 IP 人 让人想到某位新新人类 而不是一位上世纪的咏春拳 大师 直译 literal translation 华人导演吴宇森执导的 赤壁 译为Red Cliff 就是对应 赤 和 壁 二字的翻译 赤壁之战是中国历史上著名的以弱胜强的战 例 而且该地岩壁垂直 一片红色 宛若烈火烧过一样 Red Cliff的 翻译暗合此意 红色的绝壁 即 被火烧过的绝壁 暗喻战争 译 名与原片名可谓既形似又神似 另译或别译 Creative interpretation 霍元甲 译为Fearless 即 无所畏惧 让人想到 第一滴血 里 那位在越南战场上杀人如麻的美国大兵兰博 这与影片中那位扬 名上海的武术大师相差太远 而 梅兰芳 的英文片名令人吃惊地 被译为Forever Enthralled 字面意思是 永远被迷醉 其实 梅兰芳 是世界知名的艺术家 完全可以用音译直接把该片名译为 Mei Lanfang 2 事件 事物 意译 liberal translation 墨攻 译为A Battle of Wits 影片讲述战国时代 墨家的革离 以先进的守城技术帮助梁国积极防御赵国百万大军的故事 充分 展现了墨家的自卫防御军事思想 一是非攻 二是救守 墨攻 名 为攻 其实展现的是墨家的 守 A Battle of Wits的字面意思是 智慧之战 可谓深谙墨家思想的精髓 直译 直译如 夜宴 译为The Banquet 疯狂的石头 译为Crazy Stone 画皮 译为Painted Skin 以 画皮 为例分析 其实 画皮 可 以作两解 一是名词 画好的皮 二是动宾词组 画一张皮 导 演显然只取了第一层意思 这从英文名Painted Skin可以看出 因 此Painted Skin 这个译名虽然直白 但是避免了歧义 直译 意译 三国之见龙卸甲 的电影名称里有两个典故 见龙在田 意 思是早晨太阳刚刚从地面升上来 光明就透出来了 卸甲 由琵琶 曲 霸王卸甲 而来 对西楚霸王的英雄悲剧表现了更多的同情和 赞颂 电影 三国之见龙卸甲 把一身是胆的常山赵子龙刻画得淋 漓尽致 其英文片名Three Kingdoms Resurrection of the Dragon 即 三国 龙的复活 暗含以上两个典故的意义 基本符合电影的 主题 缩译 周星驰导演的 长江七号 听上去像是一艘船的名字 用缩译 法把片名译为CJ7 则与科幻题材的电影结合得恰到好处 此外 集结号 不能说的秘密 也都采用缩译法分别译为 Assembly Secret 既体现中文片名的意义 也符合英文电影名称用词少的语言 特点 3 套用成语 习语 诗词 直译 奥斯卡获奖电影 卧虎藏龙 的片名是指隐藏着未被发现的人 才 也指隐藏不露的人才 其英译名采用了直译法 译为Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 与汉语成语 卧虎藏龙 完全一致 咋一看外 国人可能不明白这是什么意思 但是这个译名忠实于汉语原文原 意 充满东方式的神秘感 意译 满城尽带黄金甲 这个片名出自唐末农民起义军将领黄巢的 诗作 冲天香阵透长安 满城尽带黄金甲 黄金甲 有金黄色的菊 花和起义的军队这两层含义 影片以黄巢的诗句为名 无疑是取其 反叛和悲剧的意思 电影片名译为Curse of the Golden Flower 即 金色花朵的诅咒 毫无诗意 让豪气冲天的 满城尽带黄金甲 黯 然失色 另译 别译 相信大多数中国观众对 无间道 的片名最直接的理解是 黑 道白道之间没有绝对的差别 指电影中黑社会和警察之间互相派 人员到对方阵营里卧底 类似 亲密无间 的意思 其实 无间 二字 取自佛教 指最深最苦的地狱 电影译名Infernal Affairs 即 恶魔的 事情 体现 无间 的佛教含义 但未能体现电影所表达的警匪两 艺术探索 ARTSEXPLORATION 2010 年 2 月 第 24 卷 第 1 期 Feb 2010 Vol 24 No 1 147 艺术探索2010 年 第 24 卷 第 1 期 总第 98 期 道是宿命的无间的主旨 再如 十面埋伏 居然译为House of Flying Daggers 恐怕看过 那部电影的观众都未必知道它指的是 飞刀门 十面埋伏 在韩 国 日本上映时 片名甚至改成了 恋人 即Lover 顾名思义 十 面埋伏 是指设伏兵于多处以围歼敌军 典故出自楚汉战争 以这 个成语作为电影片名可以说是绝配 符合这部武侠电影中反复呈 现的一步一埋伏的场景 切合 人心即是江湖 的电影主题 无论 House of Flying Daggers还是Lover 都是对 十面埋伏 的一种颠覆 或另起炉灶 三 华语电影片名翻译的文化缺失现象 目前 无论是以人名 地名 事件 事物 成语 熟语或诗词为片 名的中文电影的翻译都存在着不同程度的文化失语现象 1 以人名 地名为片名的中文电影的翻译目前多采用意译 其原因在于译者或相关方对中国文化的不自信 我们可以也应该把 霍元甲 直接音译为Huo Yuanjia 把 梅兰 芳 音译为Mei Lanfang 把 阮玲玉 改译为The Life of Ruan Lingyu或者 TheLife of an Actress 这样不仅让更多的外国人了解 中国的大师 扩大中华文化的影响力 而且充分展示中国人的文化 自信 其实只要译者对中国文化有信心 致力于表达和支持中国文 化 就能通过音译来传播中国文化 2 以事件 事物名为电影片名的翻译目前多采用直译或直 译加意译 这种译名虽然基本与原中文片名一致 但未能准确反 映原中文片名特有的文化内涵 为此 笔者建议采取直译加音译 的办法 以 画皮 为例 译名为Painted Skin 不知道外国观众看了这个 名称有没有去想纹身 刺青或者人体彩绘之类的东西 如果是这样 那就与中国观众熟知的鬼故事有天壤之别了 如果改为Ghost s Painted Skin 即 鬼的画皮 也许就可以避免这种文化缺失了 3 以成语 熟语或诗词为电影片名的翻译目前多采用意 译 另译或别译 导致译名严重缺失中国文化内涵 有 崇洋媚 外 之嫌 一般来说 西方人的思维方式比较直接 而中国人表达思想时 喜欢绕来绕去 用双关语 比喻等手法 体现在电影片名上就是其 片名往往有深刻的内涵或复杂的寓意 以 满城尽带黄金甲 为例 译为Curse of the Golden Flower就失去了原文生动形象 比喻性 极强的特色 让人无从联想到一个试图挑战王权天命 最终失败的 人 不如直译为 The City of Golden Armors 又如 十面埋伏 译为 House of Flying Daggers或Lover都是对 十面埋伏 一种可笑的 颠覆 对中国文化的抛弃 我们应该采取恰当的策略 改变这种文 化缺失 文化失语现象 四 应对策略 包惠南指出 影视片名的翻译 既要符合语言规范 又要富有 艺术魅力 既要忠实于原片名中的内容 又要体现原名的语言特 色 力求达到艺术的再创造 1 p92 这正是说明电影的片名翻译 不仅要传达信息 更要传递文化 1 语言简洁 英文电影片名的语言特色是言简意赅 结构简单 很多英文片 或以故事的男 女 主人公姓名来命名 或以故事发生的主要场所 或关键时间来命名 华语电影片名的翻译也应该如此 把人名 地 名用音译法翻译过去 从而促进中外文化交流 弘扬中华文化 2 传达文化 著名翻译家 Nida 指出 语言是文化的一部分 任何文本的意 义都直接或是间接地反映一个相应的文化 词语意义最终也只能 在其相应的文化中找到 3 p28 中国的传统文化博大精深 体现 在电影片名上往往就是片名有丰富的内涵或深刻的寓意 因此 首 先 对于没有双关的常用语可以采用意合 parataxis 而非西方式的 形合 hypotaxis 即意译法 比如 非诚勿扰 译为If You Are the One 花样年华 译为In the Mood for Love就是比较优秀的意译 片名 其次 对于具有双关含义的成语 诗词 用意译是行不通的 笔者比较赞同用 异化 的原则 即按照中国词语的字面意思直译 过去 这样既可以让西方人欣赏到中国文化的真谛 又可以让其领 略到中国人的风趣幽默 如 无间道 这个词在文化上的不可译性 让译者无法找到可以还原的词 倒不如直接译成 Wujian Tao 因 为 道教 一直就是借用汉语发音译为 Taoism的 3 拿来主义 我们可以套用优秀的英语电影片名 为我所用 如 十面埋伏 可以模仿 偷天陷阱 的英文原名Entrapment 译为Traps或Traps In Ten Directions 即 陷阱 或 遍布陷阱 又如 功夫之王 的英文 片名可以参照 指环王 的原名The Lord of the Rings 译为 The King of Kung Fu 参照The Life of Emile Zola即 埃米尔 左拉 传 还可以把 阮玲玉 译为The Life of Ruan Lingyu或者The Life of an Actress 拿来主义 的策略实际上是对优秀的英语电影 片名的模仿 迁移和重新组合 以达到 洋为中用 的效果 五 结语 优秀的影片译名标准是既要符合接受国受众的文化心理 又 要在深层语义上与原片名实现功能上的对等 因此 译者不仅要 熟谙语言的表达方式和转换方法 更应具有深刻的文化意识 在 深入了解片名字面所承载的文化信息的基础上理解影片的内容 和风格 揣摩措词用语
