handcynthia hand is a ny times bestselling author whose story about love, loss and mystery seems to be a book were all going to want to read this year. popular for her young adult books, this novel appears to be different. i plan on checking it out. dark places by gillian flynngillian flynn is not a stranger in the mustread world. her hit gone girl was all over the place in 2012. im going to recommend you to pick up a copy of dark places before watching the movie. i read it recently, and i just like it better than gone girl.things you wont say by sarah pekkanensarah pekkanen is one of my favorite fiction authors. her novels have entertained me and captured my attention one after the other. her writing style is realistic and downtoearth. things you wont say should absolutely be added to your spring or summer reading list.the boston girl by anita diamantthe boston girl, a tale of a grandmother telling her life story to her granddaughter, sounds touching and quite possibly like required reading. im not sure what else to say except that ive been a longtime fan and look forward to getting my hands on this one.first frost by sarah addison allen sarah addison allen has been one of my favorite authors for years. her latest novel, first frost, has come out. addison allens writing style is a beautiful one. shes got a mystical way to writing that captures the heart and mind. i look forward to reading first frost this year.1cynthia hand mainly writes books for _.alittle kidsbyoung peoplechousewives dthe old2when reading sarah pekkanens books, readers would most probably feel her writing is _.achildish bromanticcpractical dunusual3if you want to read a touching story told by an old lady, whose novel would you read?asarah addison allens.banita diamants.csarah pekkanens.dgillian flynns.bi took a trip to antarctica last year.first i flew from buenos aires, argentina, to the city of rio gallegos in a military (军事的) plane. then the plane took me and the others to marambio base, in antarctica from rio gallegos. during the fourhour trip in the_hercules,_i was impressed by the ice around us.as i set foot in antarctica for the first time in my life, a rush of glory ran through me. the scientists on board told me about the ozone layer (臭氧层) and the british explorer ernest shackelton, the second man to set foot in antarctica. i will never forget what i was told about the ozone layer. i was told it was getting thinner and thinner because of pollution and emission gases, which eventually would change the weather balance in the whole planet. i couldnt help feeling worried about the future of humans after i heard that.in esperanza base there are elementary schools for kids. in jubany base i saw igloos (拱形圆顶小屋) and it was interesting to learn that only scientists lived there. i was allowed to get near the antarctic animals. the penguins are my favorite because they are cute and i like the way they stick out their heads in curiosity, the way they walk and how they survive in harsh temperatures. i also saw elephant seals, which from the distance looked like rocks. i was also amazed at watching the amazing humpback whales (座头鲸) for the first time in my life.after my nineday trip, i boarded the hercules to get back. i felt as if i had been on this trip forever because i had lost track of time and space. i also realized that this had been a magical trip.4what does the underlined part “the hercules” in paragraph 2 probably refer to?aa ship.ba plane.ca base. da city.5what the scientists told the author about the ozone layer was _.ainteresting bpositivecconcerning duseless6what did the author do after he/she set foot in antarctica?ahe/she lived in an igloo.bhe/she observed some penguins.che/she saw some rocks.dhe/she played with an elephant seal.7the author most probably considered his/her trip to be _.adisappointing brelaxingcboring damazingci moved to the us from germany a few years ago. as a woman, i really love my life here. and here are some reasons.although i love my home country, i cant help but notice how friendly and helpful people in america are wherever you are. you get compliments (赞扬) from total strangers, and people offer their help if they think you might need it and they go out of their way to make sure your kids are comfortable and have fun. there are people like that in germany too, but just not as many as in the us.compared with germany, its easier to land a job in america, just based on the fact that theres an opportunity on every corner. you shouldnt be too picky though and you can change your expectations if necessary. you can get a job pretty fast. its also more likely that hard work is going to be rewarded by either a promotion (晋升) or a pay raise. a great job performance and good work ethic surely pay off.theres a good reason why only 39% of americans have a passport. this country is so large and comes with so many attractions and places to see enough for a life time. americans dont have to leave their country to enjoy beautiful beaches, mountains or landmarks. they have them all here and they can travel there in their own car or hop on the plane by just showing their drivers license as a form of photo id. so why bother paying for a passport that just needs to be renewed all the time?america is still the melting pot of the world. the fact that english is the worlds most widely used language makes it easy to get to know people from many different cultures and backgrounds. also, they all went through a similar immigration (移民) process, so you have something in common right from the start. this is a great conversation starter.8after coming to the us, the author found that _.ashe was in need of a lot of helpbpeople around her were friendlycshe no longer loved her own countrydshe started giving others compliments9which of the following statements would the author probably agree with?agood work ethic isnt rewarding in the us.bits very easy to get a pay raise in germany.camerica has more job opportunities than germany.dyou should be picky when finding work in america.10what is the third reason of living in the us given by the author?abeing easy to get a promotion.bbeing easy to go to other countries.ctraveling without leaving the country.dmeeting people from other countries.11paragraph 4 shows that many americans probably consider getting a passport to be _. aeasy bcostlycimportant dunnecessarydseveral recent studies have found that being generous increases our ability to deal with physical pain and symptoms of longterm diseases. volunteering has been linked with great decreases in blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels, and increased immunoglobulina, which improves our immune system.also, a lot of studies have found that those people who are more generous are likely to be happier, physically healthier and have a greater feeling of purpose and meaning in their lives.in fact, an interesting phenomenon, called the mother teresa effect, was found. participants of a study had an increase of immunoglobulina when viewing videos of mother teresa helping people. therefore, being generous not only benefits the receivers and ourselves, but also benefits those who observe it.health coach and author, stacey chillemi, was recently a guest on my radio show. one of the books she has written is about kindness. in her book, learning to be kind: over 300 ways to be kind & show appreciation, chillemi lists several ways to be generous. my favorites include:buy a lottery ticket for a stranger.pardon someone who owes you money.leave a dollar bill on the ground for someone else to find.whatever you give, whether its time, money, or help not only will create benefits to the receivers of your generosity and the community, but the biggest benefit might be to you.however, if you help others, its better not to expect anything in return. research shows that the benefits will decrease when we expect the receiver of our kind actions to do something in return for us. the benefits also decrease if we follow them to make sure theyre spending that money on what we think they should, or to make sure that they are in badly need of that money.12what does the mother teresa effect mean?akindness encourages others to help others.bmother teresa is inspiring others to volunteer.cpeople love watching videos of mother teresa.dviewing kind actions benefits the viewers health.13stacey chillemi wrote the book most probably to _.atell stories of kindhearted peoplebshow the benefits of helping othersctell others about her story of helpingdencourage readers to be kind to others14what should we avoid doing when helping others?ahelping those in need.bleaving money on the ground.cexpecting anything in return.dbuying lottery tickets for others.15what is the text mainly about?athe benefits of giving.bthe causes of volunteering.chealth benefits of helping.dsome findings on kindness.任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。easy ways to change your life and be happy we all want to achieve happiness. 16._ yes, many things including money, a good
