文档简介

The first Queen Elizabeth, whose name has become a synonym for the era which she dominated (1558-1603), was born in 1533 to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Called “Gloriana“ by Edmund Spenser in “The Faerie Queene“, Elizabeths deft politicalskills and strong personal character were directly responsible for putting England (at the time of her accession in 1558 a weak, divided backwater far outside the mainstream of European power and cultural development) on the road to becoming a true world economic and political power and restoring the countrys lost sense of national pride. Although she entertained many marriage proposals and flirted incessantly (her closest brush with marriage came with Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester), she never married or had children.,Elizabeth I (1558-1603) A Queen with the Heart of a King,Elizabeth inherited a tattered realm: dissension between Catholics and Protestants tore at the very foundation of society; the royal treasury had been bled dry by Mary and her advisors, Marys loss of Calais left England with no continental possessions for the first time since the arrival of the Normans in 1066 and many (mainly Catholics) doubted Elizabeths claim to the throne. Continental affairs added to her problems - France had a strong foothold in Scotland, and Spain, the strongest European nation at the time, posed a threat to the security of the realm. Elizabeth proved most calm and calculating (even though she had a horrendous temper), employing capable and distinguished men to carrying out royal prerogative.,The reign of Queen Elizabeth I is often referred to as The Golden Age of English history. Elizabeth was an immensely popular Queen, and her popularity has waned little with the passing of four hundred years. She is still one of the best loved monarchs, and one of the most admired rulers of all time. She became a legend in her own lifetime, famed for her remarkable abilities and achievements。 Elizabeth was dedicated to her country in a way few monarchs had been or have been since. Elizabeth had the mind of a political genius and nurtured her country through careful leadership and by choosing capable men to assist her. Elizabeth was a determined woman, but she was not obstinate. She listened to the advice of those around her, and would change a policy if it was unpopular。 When she ascended the throne in 1558, England was an impoverished country torn apart by religious squabbles. When she died at Richmond Palace on the 24th March 1603, England was one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world。,Elizabeth I (1558-1603) A Queen with the Heart of a King,Elizabeth was a carefree small princess in the first three year. In January 1536, Elizabeths status was down a lot because of Boleyns death. In June 1536, the parliament declared to cancel her throne from qualification After the death of Boleyn, Henry viii successively took four wives, but only had one son, Edward. In 1547, Henry viii died, the son became the king. 1547 ,Edward acceded ,only in six years. The new king had a weak body, and suffering from tuberculosis. Therefore, the replacement of the throne was just a question of time. With qualified succession to the throne: Henry VIII s daughter Mary Henry VIII s daughter Elizabeth Henry VIII s niece Jenny. According to the throne from habit, Mary should be first selection throne.,The parliament refused to recognize the legitimacy of her throne. Like father, Henry VIII, Elizabeth decided out of the relationship with the Pope and announced that the United Kingdom is the Protestant countries. She took a cautious attitude when dealing with the relationship with parliament.,She was very thrifty, but she was very positive to the prosperity of country, she relied on businessmen and pirates to increase the income of royal family. In the Elizabethan age, the most striking thing was the unusual relationship of the Queen with the pirates .She supported the pirates, on one hand, was to increase the national treasury by the pirates plunder, on the other hand was to against Spain. Britains pirate fleet defeated the “Spanish Armada “,from then, Spain went to extinction gradually, and the England soon became the “Sea Overlord“.,Elizabeth
