Unit 14 CareersYesterday I interviewed Lucy, a famous reporter.Lucy, now taking charge of “Hot News”, is always dynamic, flexible and full of wisdom. When asked the reason for her success, Lucy responded that being curious, working hard and believing in what was true were important. In her childhood, Lucy was curious about everything in the universe. She even turned over big stones to observe little insects there. With her mothers aid, she even set up her lab to become a chemist. Lucy was always committed to her study and overcame difficulties by herself due to her mothers influence. When she succeeded in solving a problem, her mother would reward her with a kiss. She always consulted her mother and never quarrelled with her. After graduation, Lucy became a reporter on TV.She liked her job, because she could help people grasp what was going on surrounding them. In addition, she could inspect and report illegal things. Sometimes, she was bothered by these things and felt panicked. But she knew as a reporter, she seldom got comfort and extra bonus. To our relief, her efforts finally paid off and shes won several awards in the USA. Lucy said a reporter must be serious, not make up any news, check his articles carefully to avoid any error and speak up representing common people. Now, we have entered the 21st century and it is a stage where the whole world is constantly changing. Lucy said she met with new challenges. And she said only by constant learning could she keep up with the changes. She needed to grasp new skills in case she fell behind the times one day. Through her recent survey, Lucy found jobs about information technology were multiplying and information companies were booming and operating well, while jobs in farming, heavy industry were decreasing rapidly. Her report reminded the government of taking measures to keep the balance. 1What does the womans son do most probably?AA postman.BA policeman.CA guard.2Why is the woman late?AThe traffic was heavy.BThe bus broke down.CShe took the wrong bus.3What do we know from the conversation?AThe woman lost her new book.BThe man will buy a new book.CThe man doesnt care about the book.4How long does the man work every week?AFor 50 hours. As we know, in the past years our school held many competitions successfully every year, like Singing Competition and Dancing Competition. In fact I do know most of the students will want to have the Reading Competition as was held last year. But, now well have something that may be much more fun. Its the Pet Competition! Well, in fact, it aims at letting all students know the importance of loving animals. Nowadays, too many people cant treat animals so well. They do not think carefully before getting a pet.At the competition, you will not be disappointed because our teachers will not give you boring lessons to ask you to love animals. Instead, we can all learn something from a relaxing environment. Theres a dog beauty contest and we will choose the best dog. The competition will be based on the dogs ability. Unfortunately this competition is not open to your pets this year. Our school has selected five dogs for this competition. That means, we can just sit back and enjoy. So please come to join this event and vote for your favorite dogs! How can you afford to miss such an educational and fun event of the year? AWe all want to believe that laughter is good for what makes us ill, but the science backing that up is thin. Most studies have been small and have relied on selfreported assessments. However, a few studies relying on lab testing do show some benefits. “A big laugh leads to the release of endorphins (chemicals that can make you feel happier) from the brain,” says Michael Miller from the University of Maryland Medical Center.A 2015 study by Miller measured the blood flow of 20 volunteers before and after watching a funny movie and a sad movie. After the sad movie, blood flow was more restricted (受限制的) in 14 of the 20 viewers. But after the movie that made them laugh, average blood flow increased by 22 percent.Financial backing for laughter and humor research is weak so weak that when Mary Bennett, director of the Western Kentucky University School of Nursing, wanted to look into the effect of laughter on the immune system, she found herself asking other researchers for equipment from their labs. “Its really hard to get taken seriously when you say you study laughter,” she says. But her study of 33 healthy women, published in 2017, showed that those who laughed at a humorous movie had higher levels of natural killer cell activity, which increased their ability to fight off disease. However, the effect was seen only in the subjects who laughed out loud, not in those who quietly watched the comedy. But most of the research on laughter and health depends on personal feelings or opinions rather than scientific facts. One study of 70 depressed elderly women found that laughter yoga was just as effective as exercise in improving mood, as measured by selfsatisfaction reports by subjects. When Bennett is asked whether laughter cures or prevents any disease, her quick answer is a simple “No.” Still, she adds, “I think its a useful addon to real medicine. If youre receiving medicinal treatment, anything you can do to help you stay healthy through something unpleasant will help.” 21What does the 2015 study show?AFunny movies may cause blood problems.BEndorphins may make people happier.CSad movies are harmful to patients.DLaughter may benefit health. 22What is a difficult problem for Bennett?AHow to lead a research team.BHow to study laughter and humor.CHow to get support for her research.DHow to do research on the immune system. 23Who got health benefits from watching comedies in the 2017 study?AThose who watched quietly.BThose who laughed aloud.CThose who watched often.DThose who laughed a lot. 由第五段中的“However, the effect was seen only in the subjects who laughed out loud”可知,在2017年的研究中,观看喜剧只对那些大笑的实验参与者有健康效果。24What does Bennett say about laughter?AIt is effective in a limited way.BIt can only cure some diseases.CIt may replace some real medicine.DIt will become a popular treatment. BIn summer 2007, I joined the British Red Cross at 15. After several days of training, I was attending my first event as a fully qualified (合格的) Red Cross volunteer. Our team was providing medical cover for a large martial arts (武术) grading event.Although Id passed my first aid course with_flying_colours,_I was nervous before the event began. Theres quite a difference between the classroom and the real thing! Two experienced adult volunteers would be working with me for the day.Rosie was taking part in the under16s event. This was supposed to be noncontact, and she was wearing full protective clothing just in case. All these precautions (预防措施) didnt help however, when her competitor misjudged a move and delivered a violent blow to her head.“Guys, we need some help over here!” Over we went, all three of us carrying various bits of kit (工具箱). Rosie was lying on the ground. As we approached we could see she was conscious Brian, my colleague took the lead.“Hey there, stay nice and still for me. Chris here is just going to hold your head. Dont worry; its just a precaution.”I helped, painfully aware that hundreds of sets of eyes were following our every move. However I soon forgot all about this as I focused on the task at hand.Rosie was complaining of pain in her neck. These are all classic signs of a possible spinal injury. Quickly, Brian found there were no other injuries and an ambulance was called. I was still holding her head and doing my best to comfort her.The doctors arrived and we put Rosie carefully into the ambulance for a trip to hospital. Then we went back to the first aid post quickly.Ten years on Ive met many more people like Rosie in need of help. Ive moved on from being a trainee to a trainer, from an inexperienced first aider to being part of an emergency ambulance team. When a call comes in, that slight feeling of nervousness is still there. However, so is the feeling of making a difference, being there during a painful moment in someones life. 25What does the underlined part “with flying colours” probably mean?ASlowly.
